Sylvia Kastberg
Sylvia Howe Kastberg, 89, formerly of Springvale, Maine, passed away on Wednesday August 29, 2007 at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kennebunk, Maine. Born in Melrose, Massachusetts, on May 7, 1918, she was the daughter of Leonard V. and Doris E. (Carter) Howe.Sylvia graduated from Melrose High School and attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. She married William H. Kastberg in 1941 and while raising her family attended the University of New Hampshire where she graduated with honors in Sociology. As a young woman Sylvia worked at the Melrose Savings Bank and then Melrose YMCA. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1965, she began a career in education, which spanned many years. She taught elementary school in Farmington, NH, then went on to teach at Nute High School in Milton, NH, where she also served as National Honor Society Advisor. She retired from teaching in 1987.For many years Sylvia lived in Lebanon, Maine. Eventually she moved to Acton, Maine and later settled in Springvale, Maine. She loved gardening and was well known for the perennial garden that adorned the front yard of her home in Springvale. Besides gardening she devoted her time to the Greater Sanford Literacy Volunteer Program and was a member of the Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling and knitting.Sylvia was predeceased by her husband, William Henry Kastberg, and two sons, William Carter Kastberg and John Henry Kastberg. She is survived by her children, James Kastberg of Alfred, Linda Pieper of Glen Cove, Connie Kastberg of Lebanon, Catherine Kastberg of Winthrop, 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, one brother, Philip Howe of Meredith, NH and several nieces and nephews.A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday September 8th at 1pm at the Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church followed by a gathering in the church hall.In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sylvia Kastberg Memorial Scholarship Fund, % Key Bank, 471 Main Street, Springvale, Maine 04083.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale.To leave a message of condolence please use the "condolences" tab to the left.
