Steven R. Allaire
Steven R. Allaire, 53, a lifelong resident of Sanford, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the Newton Center in Sanford after a period of failing health. Steve was born on August 7, 1956 in Sanford, a son of Robert and Lucille (Brine) Allaire. Steven attended Central School, Saco Valley Voc-Tech and Hawthorne School.A lifelong communicant of St. Ignatius Parish, Steve was a 3rd and 4th Degree Member of the Sanford Knights of Columbus Councils. He was also a member of the Wolves Club.Steve loved sports, especially all of the New England teams, but his all time favorite team was Duke University basketball. He also volunteered two weeks every summer during the Babe Ruth playoffs overseeing the scoreboard. For 38 years, as a volunteer for the annual Waban Telethon, he was most visible as the person who presented the latest pledge total when prompted to do so by the host.Steve was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for over 30 years. He worked in the Temporary Services Shop (Shop 99) and served in varying capacities. He was instrumental in expediting essential paperwork throughout the entire Shipyard. He received numerous awards and recognitions for the accomplishments and contributions that he made throughout his career including zero sick leave usage awards and the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award, the Navy's highest civilian award. Most importantly, Steve's presence brought great love and joy to his shipyard family. His favorite quotes were "Everyday is a good day at the Shipyard" and when it came time to get back to work "It's time to cook and burn". Before starting his workday, he would spend time with the shipyard commander watching the morning news. And at lunchtime before his two-week Christmas vacation; he would give his annual holiday speech from the back of the fire engine dressed as Santa. His greatest joy was attending shipyard parties (especially when they were for him). Steve is predeceased by his mother, Lucille Allaire.He is survived by his father, Robert Allaire of Sanford, his sister, Debbie Allaire of Sanford, several aunts and uncles. His family, as well as his shipyard family will tremendously miss him.Visiting hours for Steve will be on Friday, January 29th from 4 to 8PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 11AM at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church in Sanford.
