Stephen Bayley, a lifelong resident of Scarborough, died on February 23, 2025, at Seaside Rehabilitation Center in Portland after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born March 07, 1944, in Portland to Paul and Vivian (Plowman) Bayley. The eldest of five children, Stephen grew up in Scarborough. He graduated from North Yarmouth Academy and attended the University of Maine in Orono where he studied architecture. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. In 1971, he married Mary Leith Jewett of South Portland. The couple settled in Scarborough and soon welcomed a daughter, Adriana. Stephen designed his own home in Scarborough, in which the family still resides. Stephen began a profession in trucking by making deliveries throughout the New England area for his father’s seafood business in Scarborough. He then began a career in the long-haul trucking industry which lasted more than two decades. His focus then turned to local trucking, and he eventually retired as a driver for the U.S. Postal Service. In later years, Stephen and his wife ran a business selling firewood to local campers from their home. From an early age, Stephen enjoyed restoring antique cars and trucks. He belonged to the American Truck Historical Society, and he and his wife participated in many shows throughout New England displaying their vintage White dump truck. He was a fan of zydeco music and he and his wife followed Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas whenever the band played local venues. Stephen is survived by his wife of 54 years Mary of Scarborough; daughter Adriana Ney, and her husband Damian, of Scarborough; sisters Beatrice Bayley of Topsham, Paula Biddlestone and her husband Frank of Great Malvern, England, and Andrea Maloney of Monroe; brother James Bayley and his wife Beth of Scarborough; brother-in-law Phillip Jewett and his wife Joan of Cape Elizabeth; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved Bloodhound, Lucy. The family would like to thank the staff at Seaside Rehabilitation Center in Portland and the Compassus Hospice Team for the excellent care and compassion that they have shown Stephen over the past several years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Stephen’s name to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, 217 Landing Road, Westbrook, Maine 04092. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I met Steve when I worked at Snow’s Canning Co. back in the 60s. I was working on the Clam Crisp line, Steve drove trucks, making regular trips to New Jersey. I went to school with many of the Pine point Bayleys, so Steve fit right into my circle of friends. Our time together at Snow’s seems so long ago, but our friendship never ceased. I will forever cherish your memory. R.I.P. old friend.

  2. Thinking of Steve and his family during this difficult time. My dad and Steve’s dad were close friends from World War 2 ,on . Spent many summer vacations in Maine, enjoying the walks to the nearby beach and coming back to the fresh seafood Vivian prepared in the family kitchen… they would visit us in Ohio.
