Stanley Arthur Smith was born in Richfield Park, New Jersey on November 23, 1931 to Grace and Vernon Smith. He was the youngest sibling: Virginia (1916), Robert (1919), Betty Mae (1922), Edward (1927) and Arthur (1929).He graduated from Park Ridge High School where he played the trumpet. It was there that he met Arlene Mullins at the age of 16. She was the singer in his band and has been the love of his life ever since. They were married on March 8, 1953.Stan has always been a hard worker. He started working at Sher Woven Label at the age of 17, in addition to school, football, and his band. Stan worked his way up doing every job from head janitor to running the company with Ed. He joined the army where he was sent to Texas. That was where Debbie was born in 1954. After the service they moved back to Park Ridge where Stan Jr. was born in 1957. He returned to Sher Woven Label eventually moving the company to Sanford, Maine with Ed. Tenneford weaving was born. Stan was a master at his craft. He created new technology for the weaving industry and built many prototypes that have been used worldwide.Stan and Arlene purchased the farm in Acton in 1960. Kenny was born there in 1961. That old run down farm became the center of our lives.Stan was a visionary and passed that trait to his children who he helped build many successful businesses. From clearing the land for the Apple Valley Campground to building the Potting Shed, Craft Shop and Crabby Appleton's Ice Cream shop on the top of the hill. Smith's Red Apple Farm connected everything. Along with all of that, he was one of the founders of the Acton Ambulance Association and still managed to find time to play in the band with Ed. Stan soon added grandfather to his list. He had four granddaughters, Erin, Jennifer, Megan and Shawna. He was also able to add great grandfather when Jennifer adopted Tess and Lou. Stan was a hard working, witty, well loved man who played such an important role in so many lives and will be greatly missed.A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, July 10, at 2:00 P.M. at the Smith Farm in Acton.
