Biddeford - Sister Mary Jude (Arlene Theresa) Murray was a native of Bangor Maine, and the daughter of Peter and Clair Boyle Murray. She received her early education from St. John’s School and graduated from John Bapst High School. In 1950, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Portland from St. John’s Parish in Bangor, Maine. Sister soon began her higher education at Our Lady of Mercy College (forerunner of St. Joseph’s College in Standish). Sister’s first years of ministry included teaching grades 6,7, and 8 in Portland, Biddeford, and Farmington. In 1959, she was appointed to Mercy Hospital and undertook studies at Bentley College, in Boston, MA graduating with honors earning a B.S. in Accounting. From 1961-1969, she was Chief Accountant and Assistant Comptroller at Mercy Hospital. She obtained her Master’s in business administration from Suffolk University in Boston, MA in 1972. Sister Mary Jude was appointed Administration Director and later, Vice-President and Chief Fiscal Officer at Mercy Hospital. She was the recipient of the William Fulmer Award in 1967 for “outstanding services” in the field of hospital accounting and finance by the Maine Chapter of Hospital Financial Management Association (HFMA) Sister was also a member of the State of Maine Committee on Uniform Accounting and secretary of the American Association of Hospital Accounting- Maine Chapter. After a distinguished eighteen-year career in finance, Sister was called to serve at St. Joseph’s College Department of Business where she became Department Chair advancing to Associate Professor. St. Mary Jude’s awards for excellence included Outstanding Faculty Award (three times) which was later renamed, “The Sister Mary Jude Award,” Dana Foundation Award, and Sears Award. In 1992, Sister was elected President of the Maine Association of Accounting Professors. Sister’s love of teaching is evidenced by her participation in all aspects of her professional career of twenty years. Sister Mary Jude offered her expertise in many committees within her Religious Community including Chapter Delegate, Congregational Finance Committee, the General Leadership of the Sisters of Mercy, as a trustee on the Boards of Mercy Hospital, St. Joseph’s College Board of Overseers, Treasurer of the Mercy Foundation, and for the Diocese of Portland as a member of the Finance Council. In her later years Sister was able to return to Mercy Hospital as a volunteer until 2000, when she resided at Frances Warde Convent and in 2021 moved to St. Joseph’s Convent in Biddeford, Maine. We are grateful for the wonderful care and expertise from the Sisters and staff at Frances Warde Convent, St. Joseph’s Convent and Beacon Hospice. With her celebration of 73 years as a Sister of Mercy, the zeal and excellence with which Sister Mary Jude has faithfully served is reflected in the simple words of her religious motto, “God Alone.” Visiting hours will be held from 3-5pm on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, with a prayer service in the chapel at 5pm. 1. Sr. Mary Jude was an amazing mentor, leader, and educator. She inspired so many and was groundbreaking as a female leader. She was kind and supportive. I am a better person because of her mentorship and guidance.

  2. Sister Jude was a friend of my sister, Barbara, and I for many years. We met her through our Mom when they lived at Deering Pavillon. When our Mom passed away we kept in touch and continued our relationship. We took her out to lunch and invited her to our homes. It was always a great time as she had a great sense of humor and was always up on current events. To say the least she was a very smart and special lady. We will miss you so much Sister Jude, but know that you will be will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Much love, Barbara and Cindy

  3. Sister Mary Jude was one of my mother’s childhood best friends. They grew up together and went to school together. I met sister when she was assigned to work in a California hospital. We would meet her at work for lunch and she would come to our home in simi valley, ca. when my mother passed away in 2011, I was the one who notified Sister Mary Jude and we stayed in touch. My husband and I travelled to Maine to visit in person when she was at Frances Warde convent. She welcomed us as family and we stayed close and in touch until her death. I am sad to lose her from my life but I know she is finally where she hoped and longed to be her entire life, with the Lord. Rest in peace my dear “Aunt” Mary Jude. I will remember you always

  4. Very sad to hear of Sister’s passing. She was quite a character in my Accounting class at St Joseph’s College in 1984. I’m now a Controller for a global company due in no small part to Sister Mary Jude.

  5. My roommate had a tough time getting up for Sister’s 8am accounting class. She would always look to me when he didn’t make it and I’d have to promise to get him there for the next class, when she would then let it be known that tardiness or absenteeism is not tolerated!

  6. Hi to the sisters and nuns, I was so sorry to hear of sister Judd passing. What a wonderful lady. God bless, From, Kristen Tully

  7. We met Sister Mary Jude through our neighbor Pat Childers who was her dear friend. Sister would visit Pat and we also became friends with her. We visited Sister when we went to Maine on vacation.

  8. Sister Jude was an amazing professor who took the time to actually teach. She was passionate yet held me accountable in class. My favorite memory is when she offered and actually followed through on buying me my first glass of wine at the campus Chalet restaurant. I think of her often in my current position and honestly owe much of my own success to her and her teachings.

  9. My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to her family and the Srs. that were close to her. She was an unforgettable human being! Thank you for everything Sr. Mary Jude. You were an inspiration.
