Sister Edward Mary Kelleher, R.S.M.

June 27, 1941 ~ July 30, 2025

Biddeford – Sr. Edward Mary Kelleher R.S.M. (Sandra Jean) died peacefully on July 30, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Convent, Biddeford.  Sandra Jean and her twin brother, Edward Charles, were born to James H. Kelleher and Florence L. Sucy Kelleher in Bangor on June 27, 1941

Sr. Edward Mary graduated from John Bapst High School in 1959 and worked in the business field before entering the Sisters of Mercy.  Upon entrance, she began her religious and college studies.  She received a B.A. in Ed. from St. Joseph’s College, Standish, ME. and M.Ed. from Boston College, MA.  Sr. Edward Mary held various positions in the Diocesan Parochial Schools and in 1980 she was assigned as principal of Catherine McAuley High School, a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Mercy.

Sr. Edward Mary was among the recipients of the Diocesan Immaculate Conception Award for extraordinary service to the People of God in Maine.  She was a member of Mercy Hospital’s Board of Trustees.  Sr. Edward Mary also belonged to several professional organizations:  National Catholic Education Association, Mercy Secondary Education Association, Maine State Secondary Principals Association, Maine State Curriculum Committee and Visual Education Board, Inc.

An avid sports enthusiast, Sr. Edward Mary enjoyed all kinds of sports!  She attended all at-home games of the different sports teams at McAuley.  She cheered the loudest when they won and supported them when they lost.  For over 30 years, Sr. Edward Mary had the same seat in the bleachers where she greeted, by name, fans of McAuley basketball.  Many alumni would often stop by when in town to catch her up on their latest news.  Sr. Edward Mary was the face of McAuley!  As one student said, “She was the heart of the school.”

Sister Edward Mary was influenced by the Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine McAuley, who said, “No work of charity can be more productive of good to society, than the careful instruction of women.”  Sister Edward Mary was a spiritual influence and inspiration, touching the lives of so many. She had high expectations of each student; they entered school as girls and left as capable, young women.  Sr. Edward Mary was a role model leading with kindness, respect and dignity for her students.  Upon her retirement as principal she told the students, “Ladies, you are my legacy.”

This legacy was lived out in the number of former McAuley graduates who visited her these last two months.  The outpouring of love expressed in visits, cards and flowers, showed the gratitude they had for her!  Truly, they are her legacy!

Sr. Edward Mary was predeceased by her parents; and her twin brother, Edward.

She is survived by her dear sister-in-law, Nancy Britt Kelleher; a niece, Megan Boothby; two nephews, Clay Boothby and Warren Boothby and a close cousin, Joanne Pelkey.

Our sincere gratitude to the Staff of Home Instead, the Sisters and Staff of St. Joseph’s Convent, Biddeford, as well Northern Light Homecare and Hospice for their compassionate care to Sr. Edward Mary.

  6. Sister Edward Mary was a legacy of Catherine McAuley High School. She attended every at home basketball game and many away games and championships. She was supportive to all of us girls and made sure we graduated as smart, strong young women of vision. She will be dearly missed. Rest in sweet peace 💛

  7. Sister Edward Mary,
    was a extraordinary Women.
She was a role model for all of us girls who attended McAuley.
She was the epitome of grace and dignity.
Showing how to become good students who would become good women.
She showed us how to be a strong professional woman, with a kind and loving heart, but never took bull from anyone.
She never forgot a name or face and ready to give hugs to her girls.
The world seems less bright without her beautiful heart.
She will be missed by many.

  8. Sister was one of the most influential people in my life. I was her music teacher in the 90’s, the best job I’ve ever had. She cared for me, not just as a principal, but as a friend. She taught me grace and kindness and hospitality with “a cup of tea”. Enjoy your new life with our Lord and thank you for all the lives you touched, including my own. ❤️

    • I agree Walter, I remember the day in 6th grade at Cathedral when she told our class she was leaving to go to St Joseph’s (I believe), broke our hearts!

  9. So grateful and honored that our daughter’s spiritual, intellectual and civic life was forever guided by the grace & compassion of Sister Edward Mary. I know that we are not the only family indebted to the teaching & example of such an extraordinary woman. May Sister’s memory be a blessing to all who had the great fortune to know her.

  10. Sr. was truly an angel on Earth. I feel so blessed to have known her and to have had her guidance. She was greatly loved and will be missed.

  11. I have always felt very privileged to have been educated by the Sisters of Mercy, especially Sr. Edward Mary. She was a very impactful lady.

  12. Sister was a true inspiration to me, during my McAuley years! She always would have a kind word to say! Along with her most beautiful smile!

  13. Sister was the truest light there is. She loved unconditionally, leading with compassion and without judgement. She had a profound impact on my life and all those who had the honor of knowing her. May her soul rest in peace.

  14. Sister Edward Mary what an inspiration. You lead us at McAuley with such grace and dignity. We were all her children and she looked out for each of us with such determination. She inspired us to want to learn and how to be our own true self. She truly loved what she was doing. We were individuals to her and not just a number. So many students she saw come through the doors at McAuley but we all were individuals and were special to her. She will be missed greatly and my sincere condolences to her family.

  15. Sorry to hear that sr sister Edward Mary died she was a great principal and a wonderful human being and she was a wonderful person to be around and she has lot of laughter

  16. Rest In Peace, Sister. You are home now with your beloved brother.

You touched so many young women’s lives, including mine. I am so glad we stayed in touch all these years. My trip home in November will be sad not to see you. I will miss you terribly.

  17. All these years later and I learned we were birthday buddies all along! What an jonor to share the day with a phenomenal, PHENOMENAL woman! Not surprising that you always remembered me and my children if I saw you whilst in the mall on vacation. For the record I still remember you saying “a finished lady always wears her pantyhose” and is hot as Florida is I do, indeed (in formal circumstances), still wear my hose. The world is a better place for having you in it. May your light shine bright in the Beyond and may your soul sleep in peace.

  18. Sister Edward Mary was the first person to show up to my moms funeral I remember sitting in the pre taking a deep breathe as I was too young to lose my mom and preparing for the funeral. I was in grad school in Arkansas and hadn’t seen her in a few years. I turned around in the pew and there was Sister Edward Mary I just started crying and she opened her arms and gave me a hug. My parents are both buried across from McAuley because of how much McAuley meant to our family. Sister really loved all her girls and I will miss her and what our school stood for so much ❤️

  19. Sr. Edward Mary always had a joyous view of her work and every situation. Her laugh was sweet and kind. Her work at the high school was well known; she was an incredible role model. she was certainly an angel on earth. Eileen and John Skinner

  20. I am very sorry to learn of Sister Edward Mary’s passing. She hired me for my very first teaching job at Catherine McAuley. She was a wonderful administrator and teacher. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was extremely patient. I only saw her get her “Irish” up once. That was when some pranksters from a certain all boys school on Ocean Ave. decided to decorate the front of McAuley with shaving cream, soap, and toilet paper! I arrived at school that morning to see Sister Edward Mary charging out to her car. She promptly drove over the priest’s residence on Ocean Ave and greeted the surprised principal demanding the pranksters come and clean up the mess. Later that day, the culprits arrived, shame faced to clean up the mess at the front of the school much to the amusement of the McAuley staff and students! Sister Edward Mary was a delight. Another angel in Heaven.

  21. Sometimes in life, if you’re lucky, you get the privilege of meeting that one person who has an enormous impact on you. Sr Edward Mary was my principal for my first teaching position. Only as I continued down a different career path did I realize what i learned most from her. The importance of empathy and compassion and living it in a position of leadership. I thank you for so much Sr. Rest easy now, your legacy continues to grow. ❤️

  22. So sorry to learn of Sandy’s passing. I grew up with Sandy as part of Bangor’s Kelleher clan. Although life took us down separate roads, we always managed to keep in contact. She was warm and caring and always made everyone feel special. She certainly left her mark on all the lives she touched in her dedicated calling to education. She will be missed but her legacy will live on!

  23. Sister Edward Mary, I am so blessed to have known you. Thank you for all you did for me. Forever grateful for your guidance, support, compassion. You were the best part of McAuley. I love you forever and always. Hello to my Nanie and Grandpa Walsh me. I know you, Katherine Walsh, and Mary Anna Whitty are having some good times catching up in heaven.
Forever blessed and you are dearly missed.
    Love,
    Hayley

  24. What a blessing to have had Sister Edward Mary in my life. She encouraged us all to pursue our dreams and be the best we could be!!
    With gratitude,
    Dr. Amy Joan Beecher Knowles
    Valedictorian, CMHS Class of 1984

  25. I think about my time at McAuley often. You were such an inspiration to so many young women. I am forever grateful for your guidance, patience and support that you gave to me. So many young women had the honor of having you in their lives. I feel blessed to be one of them. Thank you Dear Sr. Edward Mary. You will forever have a special place in my heart.

  26. Sister,

I will always remember your kindness and your incredible spirit. You were the best principal anyone could ask for. You were such an inspiration for so many McAuley grads. Your love of McAuley will be felt for generations.

Thank you for being the most amazing person. You will be so incredibly missed.

  27. Sandy, I have so many memories of us playing together at Grammy’s house when we were kids. Since then you have gone on to leave a lasting impression on the kids you taught.
Good bless you now and take care of you.

  28. One of the finest role models I have ever had. I’m grateful that I was able to know and work with Sr. Edward Mary. God bless.

  29. Sr. Edward Mary right from the start we were friends! I loved how you always had your door open and a chair ready for anyone. Nothing was too big or to small, you made time for all those you served. I am so thankful for you. I loved my time at McAuley and a great part of it was due to your love, support, friendship and kindness. (Class of 95)

  30. Sister Edward Mary,
Thank you for your compassion, leadership, mentorship, faith, love, and care that you poured into each and every McAuley student. Your kind and open-hearted spirit helped shape us into the individuals we were striving to become. You set the tone and we all learned so much from you. You are dearly missed and will always be remembered. Rest in peace and grace as you join God in Heaven.

“ And he will raise you up on eagle’s wings,
bear you on the breath of dawn,
make you to shine like the sun,
