Shirley N. Smith, 85, of Sanford, a longtime resident of Biddeford-Saco, died January 23 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a long illness.She was born in Auburn, MA on August 17, 1927, the daughter of Richard A. and Donalda (Coderre) Niddrie and attended Worcester schools. She was a graduate of the Trull Nursing School in Biddeford.Shirley worked her entire career as a registered nurse, first for Trull Hospital and Notre Dame Hospital in Biddeford. She was then employed for many years with the Webber Hospital/Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford where she was the nursing supervisor for the Emergency Department, retiring several years ago.While a resident of Biddeford and Saco, she was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. She moved to Sanford several years ago and was a communicant of Holy Family Church.She was predeceased by her first husband, Jeremiah J. O'Leary, Jr. in 1968, by her second husband, William C. Smith in 1994, by her daughter Eileen O'Leary Lewis in 2008 and by her son James E. O'Leary in 2012.Survivors include her grandson, Christian J. Black, his wife Monica and their daughter Clara of Longmont, CO, granddaughter Callie O. Black and her partner Rhonda Faunce of Elmira, NY, grandson Jeremiah G. O'Leary, granddaughters Maria G. O'Leary, Erica C. O'Leary, all of Worcester, MA, daughter in law Donna Campanale O'Leary of Worcester, MA, sister Grace Little of Miami, FL, brother, James Niddrie and his wife Karen of Worcester, MA, stepdaughter, Karen Carnevale and her husband David of Westminster, CO, stepson Karl Smith and his wife Joan of Pompano Beach, FL, and step grandchildren Kelly Carnevale, Katie Carnevale Fowler, Kim Carnevale and their families, all of Westminster, CO, and several nieces and nephews.Relative and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 3 to 6 PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish at Holy Family Church, 66 North Avenue, Sanford. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Biddeford.The family would like to express its deepest appreciation to the angels at Home Helpers who were caregivers and companions and whose patience and support allowed Shirley to be able to live at home through her illness.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
