Shirley M. Pope

Shirley M. Pope, 89, a lifelong resident of Sanford, passed away on Thursday October 29, 2009 at the H. D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford. Born in Sanford on March 28, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Ernest I. and Eva M. (Cram) Houston. She graduated from Sanford High School in 1938.She retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where she had been employed as a data processing supervisor.She was one of the founders of the Shaker Valley Square Dance Club in Alfred and a former officer of the Square Dance Foundation of New England. She traveled extensively and enjoyed playing bingo. She is predeceased by one son, Richard Thomas Jr.She is survived by her husband of 26 years, George Pope of Kennebunk, two daughters, Eileen Black of North Hampton, NH, Paula Caron and her husband, Henry of Sanford, one son, Parker Thomas of Weyers Cave, Virginia, 11 grand children and many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.A Graveside service will be held on Saturday November 7, at 11:30AM at Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Newton Centers Activities Fund, 35 July Street, Sanford, Maine 04073.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.To leave the family a message of condolence please use the "condolences" tab to the left.
