Sarah W. (Hammond) Ricker, 96, of Lyman, passed away at her home on Friday November 29, 2013 following a brief illness. She was born the fourth of five children in Ashland, Maine on May 6, 1917 a daughter of the late George W. and Lucy M. (Naugler) Hammond.At the age of 8 the family moved to Springvale and she married Cecil J. Ricker in 1937. In 1946 they moved to Lyman where together they successfully ran Ricker Potato Farm. Sarah was most proud of being a housewife and mother. She was also very active in civic associations throughout her adult life. For many years she was a member of the York County Girl Scout Council as well as becoming active in the York County Extension Service where she taught exercise, fitness, sewing and personal hygiene. This led to a long involvement with the Lyman Neighbors, a group that supported Waban through fund raising and volunteerism.She is predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Cecil, her siblings, Frederick "Freshie" Hammond, Alice Richardson and Hilda "Pat" LeBlanc.She is survived by her children, Sandra L. Caron of Lyman, ME, Timothy A. Ricker and his wife, Joanne of Lyman, ME, Margaret S. Quilty and her husband, Charles of Natick, MA, sister, Margaret P. Walenski and her husband, William of Framingham, MA, and one sister in law, Violet Ricker of Springvale, ME, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.A Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 3rd at 2PM at the Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations in her memory to Hospice of Southern Maine 180 US Rt, 1, Scarborough, Maine 04074.Condolences may be expressed at www.blackfuneralhomes.comArrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
