Sara Elaine McFarland

Alexandria, VA – Sara Elaine (Persons) McFarland, 84, passed away on February 13, 2026, at the Silverado Alexandria Memory Care Community.

She was born on August 25, 1941, in Albion, Michigan, the daughter of the late Hubert and Esther (Boyle) Persons.

Sara graduated from Hillsdale High School, Class of 1959, and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College in 1967. Following her education, Sara served her country in the United States Army. She was commissioned after completing Officer Basic Course at Fort McClellan, Alabama on December 12, 1969, and honorably served until her discharge in June of 1975, attaining the rank of Captain.

On July 24, 1975, she married Paul Joseph McFarland in Hillsdale, Michigan. Together they built a life centered on service and community. Throughout her life, Sara was deeply devoted to helping others. She generously volunteered her time and was especially known for collecting items to donate to those in need.

Sara was predeceased by her husband, Paul McFarland in 2025. She is survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and in-laws.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at New Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland, Maine.

Arrangements are under the direction of the new Conroy-Tully Walker Cremation, Funeral and Gathering Center, 300 Allen Avenue, Portland.
