SANFORD - Sally Sherman Higgins of Sanford, died at home on October 2, 2010. She was born in Winchester, MA on January 24, 1934 to Roger and Margaret (Sawyer) Sherman. Her family moved to Saco, Maine in 1947, where she graduated from Thornton Academy in 1951.Horses were her passion. Sally belonged to several horse clubs over the years, including Saco Valley Riding and Driving Club, Mousam Saddle and Harness, Morgan Horse Association, AQHA, American Shetland Club, Welsh Pony Association, the Norwegian Fjordhorse Association, Abenaki Draft Horse Club, and the Central Maine Draft Horse Club. She and her husband Frank Higgins Sr. also operated the Pinebrook Pony Racing Track in South Sanford for many years.Sally and Frank also ran an operating farm for many years in South Sanford, raising many types of animals.In 1990 Sally and Frank moved to Bingham, Maine and continued to farm, raise and show Norwegian Fjord horses for over ten years. Poor health forced the sale of the farm and returned to Sanford. Sally had no horses of her own for the first time in 55 years. So, she involved herself with her granddaughter and her horses.Sally was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 37 years, Frank Sr., and her step-son George Higgins.She is survived by her daughter Karen Cote Brickett of North Waterboro; her sons Charles Hussey of Saco and Michael Higgins of Maryland. She is also survived by her sister, Allie Libby of Saco, her brothers David Sherman of Cape Elizabeth and Roger (Ralph) Merserve of Iowa, her step-son Frank Higgins, Jr. of Wells, her step-daughter, Constance Glenn of Connecticut, 13 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.Friends and family are invited to a luncheon to be held in Sally's honor on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 2:30 pm at the Town of Wells Activities Center, 113 Sanford Road, Wells, Maine.Arrangements are under the direction of Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
