Resided in:
Shapleigh, Maine
Roland H. Goodwin, 99, of Shapleigh, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at the Southern Maine Hospital in Biddeford. He was born on December 13, 1923 a son of the late Harry R. and Grace M. (Littlefield) Goodwin. He attended local schools and graduated from Lindsey High School in Shapleigh.
As children, he met his future wife Hazel Sanborn at 4H club meetings, and continued their friendship through their school years. Hazel said she was struck by his wavy red hair. They were married on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945 in Shapleigh, and remained sole mates all their lives.
His strong work ethic began when he was a young boy working on the family farm. As the years passed on he worked for his brother Carlton at Portland Pipeline in South Portland. During the war years, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard. He also worked alongside his brother in law as a logger when they operated the new, first of its kind, one man Disston chainsaws. At the age of 25 he began his business “The Outboard Shop” with his brother in law Ted Gooding, first on Oak Street in Springvale, then the business moved to the Mobil Filling Station, Main Street in Springvale, and with the advent of Springvale Urban Renewal he then relocated to the former Sears Roebuck Garage on Main Street, Sanford. Roland was 73 years old when he closed the Sanford location. He also enjoyed gardening throughout his life, using heirloom seeds originating from his ancestors of the 1800’s. He enjoyed the outdoors, and grew Christmas trees that were sold at his business. As a hobby that followed him through life he enjoyed tapping maple trees and making syrup. Also for many years he was a member of the budget committee for the Town Of Shapleigh.
Roland was an avid harmonica player, self-taught at an early age, as he said “behind the barn” so he would not bother his mother as he practiced. He played the harmonica throughout his life. His children fondly remember many Saturday nights when he would gather with friends who played guitar, fiddle, drums, accordion and spoons, singing and playing old songs for hours.
He is predeceased by a daughter, Rebecca Goodwin Lapierre, one brother, Carlton Goodwin and one sister, Helen Gooding.
He is survived by his wife, of 77 years, Hazel M. Goodwin, daughter Joyce Lessard and her husband Norm, son Richard Goodwin and his wife Brenda, grandchildren Lisa Lancraft and her husband Robert, Lori Brooks and her husband Ronald, Timothy Lessard and his wife Michele, Richard Goodwin Jr, Jeffrey Goodwin and his wife Sherry, Kelly Morrill and her husband Jon, great grandchildren, Jakob Brooks, Gage Lessard, Rebecca Lancraft, Ryan Signore, Kayla Roubo and her husband Mack, Alyssa McGinn and her husband Thomas, Justin Goodwin, Kyle Goodwin, great great grandchildren, Gracelee Roubo and McKinley Roubo and Scarlet Hazel McGinn due in June, and also several nieces and their families.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, March 1st from 2 to 4PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home with a funeral service to be held at 4PM. Burial will be in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.
