SOUTH PORTLAND Roland F. Berthiaume, Jr., 75, died Sunday, March 13, 2016 at South Portland Nursing Home. Born and raised in Biddeford where his heart remains, he was the son of the late Roland and Rita (Bernier) Berthiaume. He married Shirley (Giroux) Smith on February 14, 1981. A hard working man, Roland held multiple jobs during his working life. The majority of his career was spent with Saco Defense for 25 years. He was also proud to work as a crossing guard at the intersection of Brackett and Spring streets in Portland. He was a fun loving person who enjoyed music, dancing, traveling and family gatherings. Above all else, Roland cherished his family and enjoyed attending sporting events for his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed. Roland is predeceased by his stepson, Joseph Smith, and his daughter in law, Laurie Lachance. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Berthiaume of South Portland; children, Carl Berthiaume and his companion Debi of Columbia Falls, Allen Berthiaume of Saco, Nichole Hamm and husband Paul of Biddeford; stepsons, Philip Smith of South Portland, Steven Smith and wife Angela of South Portland; siblings, Claudette Warren and husband Edward of Biddeford, Joanne Nason and husband Alan of Scarborough and Richard Berthiaume and wife Cathy of Sanford; his adored 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Also survived by his favorite aunt Lillian Caron of Biddeford and numerous nieces and nephews. Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday from 3-7PM at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Thursday at 9:15AM followed by a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
