Roger E. Lister
Roger E. Lister, 74, passed away on May 16, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 10, 1944 , to Edward and Ismay Lister, in Sanford, Maine, where he resided for more than 60 years before moving to Lebanon. He attended schools in Sanford, and went on to graduate from the University of Maine at Farmington, with a degree in Elementary Education. On July 24, 1965, he married the love of his life, Beverly Ann Jones. Together they had two children, Scott and Joanne. Roger was a teacher for many years in the MSAD #60 School district, teaching at Lebanon Elementary School and the Hanson School. He taught grades 4 - 6, with many years as a Fourth Grade teacher. 'Mister Lister,' was a beloved educator and mentor to thousands of students over the years. His love of learning was evident in the innovative lessons he shared with students. Former students still remember the bridge project and the science fair he founded. He was recognized as an outstanding educator by 'Who's Who of American Teachers.' A student recently wrote, "He's the only teacher that ever touched my heart. He had a way about him that touched many students hearts."Roger was a man of great faith and was member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church for more than 60 years. He gave of himself in service, beginning with his work on the Cradle Roll, singing in the Junior Choir, then teaching Sunday School, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, being a Trustee, Deacon and serving on the Pulpit Committee. Roger was a 32nd degree Mason for 30 years. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, and Pioneer Club, 7th Degree. In recent years he was also a member of the Masonic motorcycle group, The Widow's Sons.An accomplished musician, Roger played the trumpet and was proud to be a professional musician. For years he could be heard playing Sunday evenings with Sanford Town Band, in Gowen Park. He especially enjoyed playing Big Band music.A lifelong sportsman, Roger was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors. From bow hunting, to fishing, and the Beagle Club, he was always up for a day spent in nature. He had a network of numerous friends he shared these activities with, and especially enjoyed his time fishing with his closest friend, Larry. He loved spending time on his motorcycle and attending car shows with his 1959 Chevy. In his free time he also enjoyed woodworking, even creating snowshoes and founding his own snowshoe making company with his son, Scott.His smile brightened any room. He was a lovely man and you didn't have to know him long to know he would take the shirt off of his back to help someone in need.Despite his many titles and achievements, Roger's greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly (Jones) Lister of Lebanon; son, Scott (Bridget) of Lebanon; daughter, Joanne Lee(Brian) of Cape Elizabeth; four grandchildren, Ashley, Jordan, Aidan and Owen; and a brother, Robert (Jeannine) of Limington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Ismay Lister. Visiting hours will be on Monday, May 21st from 5 to 8PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A Masonic Service will take place that evening at 7:15PM. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at the funeral home at 1PM.
