Roger Devoid
Roger Devoid, 76, of Sanford, died August 25 at the Kennebunk Center for Health and Rehab after a long illness.He was born in Sanford on November 17, 1936, the son of Ernest and Aline (Doyon) Devoid. He attended Sanford schools and earned his GED. He then attended the University of Southern Maine.Roger served for two years in the Maine Army National Guard.He was employed with Cyro Industries for several years, retiring in 1985 due to ill health.He was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church where he was a lector, sang in the choir and played guitar and piano in the folk group.Music was very important to Roger. An appreciation for classical music and opera was instilled in him by his parents at a young age. He enjoyed signing for others, in church, at the annual Waban Telethon and often sang the National Anthem at the Fourth of July celebration in Gowen's Park. His tastes in music were not limited to the classics, he was a big fan of Elvis Presley and it is said that he did a mean Elvis impersonation. Roger especially loved to sing at the local nursing homes, often fulfilling requests from patients to sing the old French songs.Roger was predeceased by a daughter, Angela Devoid in 1988 and by a brother, Ronald Devoid in 2012.Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Ursula (Marcoux) Devoid of Sanford, son Marc Devoid, his wife Therese and their children Nicholas, Celine, Alex, Claire and Dominic of Wisconsin, son Donald Devoid and his wife Samantha of Massachusetts, and his brother Paul Devoid and his wife Ann of Sanford.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM at the Holy Family Church of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, 66 North Avenue, Sanford. Burial will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.
