Scarborough - Robert Bickford Wing, 91, died on Friday, July 5, 2019, at the Maine Veterans' Home with his family by his side. Bick was born on November 13, 1927, in Lewiston, the son of the late Robert E. and Alice O. (Sanborn) Wing. He grew up in Auburn, attended Lake Street School, Webster Jr. High, and graduated from Edward Little High School in the Class of 1946. After high school, Bick enlisted in the United States Navy and honorably served during World War II from 1946 to 1951. Bick and Pauline raised their two children together and Bick worked as a banker in Lewiston and Waterville for 34 years, retiring in November of 1990. In his free time Bick enjoyed photography, skiing, camping, and golfing. All of which he enjoyed with his family. His children remember camping as a family at Popham Beach and Hermit Island, Phippsburg, Maine and time at their cottage in Camp Ellis, Saco. For many years, Bick and Pauline lived in Scarborough, Maine and Clearwater, Florida. At age 85, Bick took up painting and continued walking his favorite beaches and playing golf. Five years ago, Bick survived a stroke; and moved to the Maine Veterans' Home Scarborough where he became a beloved resident who cheered fellow residents and staff with his trademark greetings, smiles, and laughter. He enjoyed the many activities offered at the Veterans Home. Bick's family would like to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans' Home for their kind and compassionate care during the past 5 years. 1. Thank you for sharing your memories of dad’s parents, Bob and Alice and offering your condolences. My grandfather Wing loved his extended family very much and we met many of them when I was younger. I believe that your grandmother was Ethel Wing Foss, the oldest of Addison and Maud’s children. My grandfather Wing was the youngest. Wings can be strong, resilient, fun and funny. My father Bick, Bob’s son, inherited those Wing traits and they carried him well through 91 years of life.

  2. Hey Bick, bingo wasn’t the same without you tonight. I’m glad to have gotten to know you over the past couple of years, and am thankful you shared the books of your paintings and family photos with me while we talked about your trip to Alaska, your time on the Saco river, and learning how to paint at 85 with the supplies your sister gave you while watching Bob Ross. 🙂 You are an inspiration, and I’m glad to have known you. –David

  3. I remember meeting “Bick” when I was a young child, I think it must have been some family gathering in Wayne. “Uncle Bob” Wing was my father’s uncle, Ethel Wing Foss his sister. I have fond memories of Uncle Bob and Aunt Alice, visiting (as an adult) in their Whitney street home. My brother Brian Foss would shovel their walkway and always argue with Uncle Bob about pay! I enjoyed his stories, they were a warm and kind couple. I learned a few things about my Nana Foss from them! I was sorry to hear of Bick’s passing, the families have lost track over the years, since my parents Willis and Vera died. I just wanted to reach out and give his family my sincere wishes. 4. David, Thank you for all the time you spent with Bick at MVH. I am sure that he enjoyed the attention. I am glad that the books he and we made up for him, allowed him to more easily share his stories and history. That was important. Despite his stroke, his sense of humor, his love of people still came through every day. I believe that this was a bonus job he was offered in the last five years of life and he took full advantage of it. We miss him, but take comfort in the knowledge that he was well cared for and loved at MVH. And that he has been an inspiration for many. He certainly is for me. Thank you!
