Robert H. "Bob" Waterman, 85, of Springvale, passed away at Goodall Hospital of complications from prostate cancer. Bob was born on September 8, 1922 in Portland, the only child of Albert H. and Eva J. (Brinkman) Waterman.During World War II, he served as a radar/radio mechanic in the 388th Bomb Group of the U. S. Army and was stationed in London. After having reached the rank of Sergeant, he was honorably discharged, distinguishing himself with numerous medals. Returning to Bowdoin College, he was a member of the Beta Kai Sigma fraternity, graduating with the Class of 1944, receiving a degree in government. Leaving college, Bob bought the Douglas Hill Apple Orchard in Sebago where he discovered the difference between Paula Reds and Granny Smiths.As a young orchardist, he married Judy Atkinson of Yarmouth. After starting a family he formed a partnership with Joe Sullivan to purchase Romac Orchards in Acton. He expanded his career in the apple business to include many years as an apple broker with J. P. Sullivan & Co.In retirement, Bob and Judy loved traveling, boating, renovating houses in the Florida Keys, Arizona, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Cape Elizabeth, Sanford, Springvale, Ossipee, NH, and the company of close friends and family. One of their favorite memories was piloting their power boat the entire length of the Inter-coastal waterway, starting in Key West and ultimately ending in Portland Harbor.Bob is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Judith Atkinson Waterman of Springvale; 4 children: daughter Gail Klahs and her husband Wayne Klahs of Kennebunk; daughter Ann Vermette and her husband Gregory Vermette of Springvale; son Gordon Waterman and wife diana tomasello waterman of Shapleigh; and daughter Nancy Waterman of Kennebunkport; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren: Jennifer St. John and husband Paul, children Grady and Eva; Peter Vermette and wife Lyndal, daughter Lena; Lisa Pacillo and husband Bartley Pacillo; Maria Vermette, Rob Waterman, Brianna Waterman, Derek Waterman, Bethany Klahs and Janessa Klahs. Friends and family are invited to visit with Bob's family on Saturday morning from 10 - 11 AM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM at the funeral home with interment to immediately follow in Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.Condolences may be expressed by clicking on the Condolences tab at left.
