Robert A. Nigro Sr.

South Portland-Robert A. Nigro Sr., 76, a long-time resident of Bonny Brier Rd, died Wednesday, April 22, 2015 after a courageous battle with Parkinson disease at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough with his loving family by his side. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 31, 1938, a son of Carmine Sr. and Dorothy (Lang) Nigro. He graduated from Malden High School (1956), attended prep school at Bridgeton Academy and received a B.A. degree in Business from Colby College, class of 1961. He married Sylvia (Sandy) A. Clausen on January 6, 1960, at St. Josephs Church in Malden, Massachusetts. He worked in public accounting at the firms of Baker Adam and Brooks Albin. He was a Bursar for St. Francis College in Biddeford for many years. Roberts last place of employment was with Union Telephone, where he worked until his retirement in 2004. He was an excellent athlete throughout his life. In addition to being captain of his high school and college football teams, he continued participating in adult hockey and golf leagues. He was also a cofounder and coach for South Portland Youth Hockey. Robert was an active, devoted father. He relished family summer vacations including his time spent at the Samoset Resort. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting; and was his grandchildrens #1 fan at their sporting events. He is predeceased by a brother, Carmine Nigro Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sandy Nigro; three sons, Robert Nigro Jr. and his wife Joan of Scarborough, Mark Nigro and his partner Terri Diolio of Portland, and Thomas Nigro and his wife Rhonda of Portland; two daughters, Deborah Labbe and her partner Chris White of Lyman and Nancy Morin and her husband Peter of Scarborough; a sister, Leslie Tammaro of North Andover, Massachusetts; a brother, Arthur Nigro of Billerica, Massachusetts; ten grandchildren, Scott, Christopher, Shaun, Andrew, Ellie, Jackie, Dylan, Trevor, Cam, and Beth; and a great-grandson, Aaron Robert. Visiting hours will be 3:00 7:00 pm, Sunday, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11:00 am, Monday, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough. Burial will take place at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
