SCARBOROUGH – Robert Ernest Merrill, 91, passed away on September 30, 2024, at the Maine Veterans’ Homes in Scarborough. He was born in Portland on April 10, 1933, the oldest of 2 children and son of the late George E. and Daisy M. (Robinson) Merrill.
Robert married Pauline M. Van Vliet on September 15, 1951 in Portland. He served in the Army during the Korean War, he also served in the Navy, and in the Marine Corps Reserve.
After his military career, Robert worked at a bakery in Portland until he achieved a position at S. D. Warren Paper Mill in Westbrook where he worked until his retirement in 1994.
Robert was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Pauline, who passed away on December 24, 2022; sister, Patty; and daughter-in-law, Lynda. Robert is survived by his 5 children, Robert E. Merrill, Jr. of Standish, Thomas W. Merrill and his wife Cindy of Londonderry, NH, Katherine A. Silver and her husband John of Standish, Judy A. Hager and her husband Kevin of Boerne, TX and Paul S. Merrill and his wife Jean of Old Orchard Beach; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great- grandchildren.
Robert will be laid to rest beside his wife at Highland Lake Cemetery in Westbrook; graveside services will be held in private with his family.
