Robert C. Harmon
Robert Clyde Harmon of Falls Church, Virginia, died August 10, 2014.He was born in Auburn, Maine in 1930. Bob grew up in Bridgton, Maine, graduating from Bridgton High School in the class of 1948.Bob received his BA degree from the University of Maine in 1952 and his MA from the University of Maine in 1961. He served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954. Bob worked for the Refugee Relief Program in Germany from 1955 to 1957 and for the National Security Agency from 1958 to 1961. He worked as a civilian in the Military Intelligence in Paris from 1961 to 1965.In 1971, Bob received his PhD from George Washington University. He was Professor of German at Gallaudet College for the Deaf from 1967 to 1986, retiring from Gallaudet in 1986.Bob traveled to many countries and spoke several languages. His main hobbies were tennis, skiing and travel. After he retired, he spent much of his time painting. He belonged to the Potomac Valley Skiers Club.Bob was most recently living at the Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads, after living for many years in Fairlington, Arlington, Virginia.Survivors include Bob's brother Jerry Harmon of Gloucester, VA, Bob's sister and brother-in-law Ruth and David Leipold of Sanford, ME and eight nephews and nieces.A memorial reception will be held at the Goodwin House BC, 3440 S. Jefferson Street, Falls Church, Virginia on Friday August 22 between the hours of 2 and 4 PM.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Bob's favorite charities: The Jane Goodall Institute, 1595 Spring Hill Road, Suite 550, Vienna, VA 22182 or to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York NY 10018.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
