Robert J. Gagnon, 90, of Sanford, died on Friday, May 7, 2021 at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence in Portland.Robert was born in Canada on November 27, 1930 to Albert and Delianne (Guillemette) Gagnon. When he was young his family relocated to Sanford where he was raised. In 1953 he married Theresa Bernier and together they raised two children and shared nearly 67 years of marriage. During his working life he was employed for several years at the mills in Sanford before taking a position as a custodian at Emerson School where he was employed for 22 years until his retirement. During his retirement he continued to work for several years as a fill in custodian whenever he was needed.Robert was a communicant of St. Therese of Lisieux Parish in Sanford. He loved to play cards and looked forward to weekly Saturday night card games with family and friends. He enjoyed making birdhouses which his wife would paint and they would sell. He also enjoyed taking Sunday rides to the beach, visiting the AMTRAK station and going on daily trips to the local stores. Robert was always very generous with his time and was there for family and friends whenever they needed a hand. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be dearly missed.Robert was predeceased by his son, Norman Gagnon.Surviving are his wife, Theresa Gagnon of Sanford; his daughter, Diane Binette and her husband Jim of Sanford; five grandchildren, Stacey Chevalier and her husband Barry, Kelly Gamboa and her husband Eli, Eric Cormier and his fiancee Ashley, Katie Binette and her fiancee Dan and Nicole Mayo and her husband Ben; five great-grandchildren, Avery and Carter Cormier and Brooke, Bristol and Bella Mayo; two siblings, Yvette Lamontagne of Sanford and Bert Gagnon and his wife Margie of Mechanicsville, MD and several nieces and nephews.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 14th at Holy Family Church, St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, located on North Avenue in Sanford. Interment will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider sending a memorial contribution to Waban Projects, Inc., 5 Dunaway Drive, Sanford, Maine 04073.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
