Robert N. Bailey Jr., 85, of Sanford, passed away on Saturday February 18, 2017 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was born on July 16, 1931 in Pawtucket, R.I., a son of the late Robert Sr., and Bertha ( Bromley) Bailey. He served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict stationed stateside as an airplane mechanic. He then attended the University of Rhode Island, graduating in 1963 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.Robert was a bugler with the Warwick Drum and Bugle Corps and it was during this time he met a little drummer girl by the name of Dorothy Rodrigues, who later became his wife. They spent most weekends on the road, marching in various parades and band competitions for years, where they earned countless ribbons and trophies.His employment career began with Linde Corp and Union Carbide eventually leading to plant manager at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, CT, later relocating to the North Berwick plant in 1979, retiring in 1987.Once in Maine he became involved in local politics and civic affairs, as a town meeting member, serving on the planning board and the zoning board of appeals. He was an active member of the Sanford Legion Post. Robert also loved nature and was at his best when he was out fishing and hunting. He was proud of the fact that he finally got a moose in the Jackman area.Robert is predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy (Dot) Bailey who passed in 2011.He is survived by his daughters, Nance Cashman and her husband, John of Tariffville, CT., Denise Bailey of Sanford, Pamela Bailey of North Windham, grandchildren, John Cashman, Caitlin D'Amour, Heather Feather, Shannon Cashman, newly arrived great granddaughter, Sawyer D'Amour, brothers, James Bailey and Charles Bailey, sisters, Marion Tibbets and Barbara Penniston.Services for Robert will be held on Tuesday, February 21st at 6PM with visiting hours beginning at 4PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
