SOUTH PORTLAND - Robert Bachand, 89, of the Maine Veterans Home, Augusta, and formerly of South Portland, died peacefully on August 23, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Springvale, October 30, 1924, the son of Joseph and Malvina (Rousin) Bachand. He went to local schools. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. He received an honorable discharge from the Marines in 1945. After returning home to Sanford he worked for the Prudential Insurance Co and the Coca-Cola Co. In 1950 he went to work for the John J. Nissen Baking Co in the sales department. He worked for 30 years and retired as a Sales Manager. Robert had been an active member in the Lodge of Elks. He was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Sanford and Augusta Lodge of Elks. He was also a Past District Deputy of the Grand Lodge of Elks. He took a demit after 50 years in the Elks. In 1946 he married Constance Richard of Sanford and they had 5 children. She predeceased him in 1990. In 1992 he married Ubaldine Loranger of Portland. She predeceased him in 2008. When Robert married her, their blended family became 10 children and many grandchildren. Robert enjoyed hand braiding rugs for the many members of his family and playing cards with family and friends. He is survived by his 5 children: two daughters, Charlene and her husband Bob Reed of Atlin, Canada, and Monique and her husband Steve Frank of Manchester; three sons, Barry and his wife Debbie of Rome, Stephen and his wife Deb of Windham, and Craig and his wife Sue of Casco. He also leaves 4 stepchildren: Marc Loranger and his wife Patti of Livermore, CA, Robert and his wife Deborah of Windham, Francis and his wife Nancy of Portland, and Justin and his wife Lynn of Portland. He is predeceased by Richard Loranger from Portland. He is also leaves 13 grandchildren: Sabrina Federico, of Westbrook, Robert Bachand of Salisbury, NC, Eric Bachand of Rome, Megan Frank, of New Haven, CT, Jeff Frank of Sparks, MD, Adam Loranger of Portland, Jason Loranger, of Huntington Beach, CA, Griffen Elisabeth Loranger of Portland, Nathan Jacob Loranger of Portland, and Danielle Patrick Loranger of Livermore, CA. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Florence Bachand of Brunswick, a brother -in-law Gerard Vaillaincourt of Berwick, and Dick Frost of Laconia, NH. The Bachand family would like to sincerely thank the staff at the Maine Veterans Home of Augusta for their loving and dedicated care. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, from 5-7 PM at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Thursday, at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Interment will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery, Sanford.Online condolences may be expressed below.
