Richard L. McFarland, 74, of Shapleigh, formerly of Sanford, died at his home on March 16, 2012.Richard was born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 1, 1938 to Harold and Ella (Meunier) McFarland. His family moved to Sanford when he was a small child where he grew up and attended local schools. Richard served in the U.S. Army in the 1950's. After completing his enlistment he returned to Maine and was employed for a time at the Kennebunk Department of Public Works. He also held several other jobs until he began working for the Riverhurst Farm in Kennebunk. He was employed at the farm for 38 years up until the time of his death.Richard was a member of the NRA and an avid NASCAR fan. He enjoyed watching the races as well as collecting memorabilia. He particularly liked to root for his two favorite drivers, Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Richard was a daily patron of the Third Alarm Diner in Sanford. He enjoyed eating there, sometimes multiple times a day and socializing with the staff and fellow customers.Richard was predeceased by a sister, Genevieve McFarland.Surviving are three children, Richard, James and Holly; three step-children, David Scott and his wife Mandy of Shapleigh, James Scott of Port O'Connor, Texas and Shelly Edeburn of Rockport, Texas; two step-grandchildren, Erica Scott of Buxton and Shane Scott of Shapleigh and three cousins, Gloria Brown of Wells; Helen Pajama of Debary, Florida and NASCAR Corey.Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:30 PM with a memorial service following at 2:30 PM on Sunday, March 25th at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home located at 29 Winter Street in Sanford.The family would like to express their gratitude to staff of the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine and Hospice of Southern Maine for the care and compassion shown to Richard during his illness.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route 1, Scarborough, Maine 04074.To leave a message of condolence for the family please visit www.blackfuneralhomes.com.
