Richard H. Lovell, 84, of Sanford, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday May 2, 2007, following a courageous battle with amyloidosis. Richard was born in Malden, MA, on December 3, 1922, the son of Bertrand and Marguerite (Hersom) Lovell. He attended school in Acton, graduating from Sanford High School with high honors in 1940. He was a decorated serviceman during WWII, having served with the 3015th Engineer Co., He worked at the South Portland Shipyard before the war. After returning home from service he did auto body repair. Then he was hired as a nuclear pipe welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiring with 29 years of service.Richard was an avid gardener. With his parents, he raised over 1500 gladioli at his parent's home in Acton and won many blue ribbons. He enjoyed traveling, camping, carpentry and his family. He was a quiet private person whose family came first. He was always ready to tackle any job that needed doing from home renovations to any repair. He maintained his own home, his parents, and was the first one called to help any of his children or grandchildren. Richard was a fixture, albeit in the background, at his daughter Sandy's place of business in Shapleigh, the former White's Good Earth Marketplace, having built most of the store fixtures and being her right hand man.He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ernestine (Thibodeau) Lovell of Sanford, his children, daughter, Eileen Marsh and her companion, Eric Kenney of Acton, son, Thomas Lovell and his wife, Sondra of Latham,NY, Tom's children, Heather, Sarah and Ryan, daughter, Sandra White and her husband, David of Shapleigh and their children, Kara Metcalf and husband, Rick, and their children Lorin, Halley, Benjamin and wife Heather and their children, Amber, Jordan and Mason, Jacob and fiancee, Jessica Knight, Justin, Jonathan, Katherina (Katie) White.Thank you to the many doctors, nurses and staff who were kind, caring, and compassionate in particular Home Health VNS and Hospice of Southern, Maine.Graveside services will be privately held at the Forest Grove Cemetery in Lebanon.In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to a charity of one's choice.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale.To leave the family a message of condolence please use the "condolences" tab to the left.
