SOUTH PORTLAND - Richard W. Chantrill, 81, of Ocean Street, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Maine Medical Center. He was born on December 24, 1929, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, a son of William F. and Viola (Holsclaw) Chantrill. He was educated in Iowa Falls schools. He worked on the family farm for a short time prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served as a Fire Control Technician aboard the USS Prairie during the Korean Conflict. He married Lucille J. Fraser in San Diego, California, of September 17, 1954. Upon moving to Maine, he worked construction, for Hoods, and for Portland Pipeline from 1956-1962. He then worked for Crosby Laughlin from 1962-1985 and for the South Portland School Department until 1995. He was currently employed at the South Portland Municipal Golf Course. Richard was very active supporting local Boy Scouting with Troup #22. He volunteered at Camp Hinds in Raymond and, with his friend Frank Maguire, took scouts on trips to Baxter State Park, Mt. Katahdin, and the White Mountains. He once attended a National Scout Jamboree. He was an avid golfer who had shot two holes in one; reader of western novels, hiker, and outdoorsman. He is predeceased by a brother, Clyde Chantrill. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years; a son, John F. Chantrill and his wife Rosaria of Auburn; a sister, Margaret Schluter of Mason City, Iowa; a brother, James Chantrill and his wife Roma of Chapin, Iowa; a sister in law, Josephine Chantrill of The Colony, Texas; a sister-in-law, Judith Darling of South Portland; a granddaughter, Jennifer Chantrill of Seattle, Washington; a grandson, Nathan Chantrill, US Army, of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 am, Friday, at Holy Cross Church, corner of Cottage Road and Broadway, South Portland. Burial at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta will take place at a future date.
