Portland - Rev. Stephen M. Mulkern, 96, died February 11, 2021 in Springvale.
He was born in Portland, Maine on December 30, 1924, a son of Coleman and May Greene Mulkern. He attended Cathedral Grammar School, and Cheverus High School where he was a member of the last class that was instructed by diocesan Priests. He graduated in 1942 where he was the class Valedictorian. Rev. Mulkern then studied at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he graduated in 1945. He then studied at St. Mary's Seminary & University in Baltimore, where he received a degree in Theology S.T.L (License to teach Theology).
Rev. Mulkern was ordained on June 11, 1949 by Bishop Daniel J. Feeney at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. While in Portland, from 1956-1963, Rev. Mulkern served as the Director of Radio and Television Activities for the Diocese of Portland. At the same time, from 1956-1958, he also served as Chaplain at the Motherhouse for the Sisters of Mercy, and taught Theology at St. Joseph's College in Standish. Further, he served as the Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, 4th degree, in Portland at that time.
In 1963, Rev. Mulkern became the Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Lubec, where he served until 1968. He then served as Pastor at St. Thomas' Church in Dover-Foxcroft from 1968-1970; at St. Martha's Church in Kennebunkport from 1970-1987; and finally at St. Patrick's Church in Newcastle from 1986-1995. While at those parishes, he also served as chaplain for the local Knights of Columbus Councils.
Upon retirement, Rev. Mulkern first resided in New Harbor, and later in Portland. He spent his retirement years assisting at parishes when needed. Most notably he continued to say a monthly traditional Latin Mass at St. Patrick's Church in Newcastle, and at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland when needed.
Rev. Mulkern is survived by many cousins.
The Rite of Reception and Liturgy of the Hours will be held at 3PM on Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, where Rev. Mulkern will lie in state until 6PM. A Requiem Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10AM on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception. Interment will follow in the family lot at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
