Raymond L. LaChance

Raymond L. LaChance, 89, of Sanford, passed away at his home in Springvale on Saturday, December 28, 2019.He was born on November 5, 1930 to Oliver and Mamie (LeBlanc) LaChance in Sanford where he grew up and attended local schools including Notre Dame School, Hamlin School, and Sanford High School. After graduating high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served from 1951-1955.During his working life, he was employed at the S.B. Emery Store in Sanford, and Sprague Electric from where he retired. After his retirement he still wanted to keep busy and worked at Pioneer Plastics for a time.He was a member of the Springvale Social Club, the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.Raymond had been a sports fan all of his life. He especially enjoyed baseball and helped start the Babe Ruth League in Southern Maine. One of his proud moments was when he received a plaque from Babe Ruth's daughter, Julia Ruth Stevens. He enjoyed coaching baseball and would make sure the children had a glove even if he had to bring one from home. Raymond was a devoted Catholic and lived his life in a caring and humble manner. He would try to help anyone in need, and challenged others to do their best. He had high standards and was particular about a "job well done". Often he would mow a neighbor's lawn or rake for them without them knowing. He wanted to make things better and didn't expect to get credit for it.He is predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Roland and Paul LaChance.Survivors include his wife of 62 years Muriel LaChance, his daughter Marilyn LaChance Smith, his former son in law Luis Smith, grandchildren Jeremy Smith, Savanna Smith and Nicholas Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 11 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, 66 North Ave, Sanford.To leave a message of condolence click tab at left.
