Raymond M. Carpentier

Raymond M. Carpentier, 96, a lifelong resident of Sanford, passed away at his home with his two sons by his side on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. He was born in Sanford on January 16, 1917, a son of the late Leon and Valerie (Richer) Carpentier.As a young man growing up during the Depression, he left school in his freshman year to work with his father and brother cutting wood, which they sold to generate household income. He also worked for a short time at the Sanford Water District. In 1942, he enlisted in the US Army and proudly served his country during WWII. Following his discharge in 1946 he worked in the Goodall Mills until their closure in 1953. Then, he found work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he worked as a pipefitter and later as a Planner/Estimator for 26 years until his retirement. Upon retirement he traveled around the world. The highlight of his travels was a visit to North Africa with his brother Aldas, to pay their respects at the grave of their younger brother Joe, in Tunisia. A generous benefactor, he contributed to many charities. He helped sponsor a child's education in India and was able to meet her on a trip to that country. He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret Brochu Carpentier, daughter, Michelle, brothers, Aldas, Joseph, Roger, sister, Pauline.He is survived by two sons, Mark Carpentier of Portland and Paul Carpentier of Sanford.Visiting hours for Mr. Carpentier will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church.
