Philip Joseph Doria

December 1, 1954 ~ August 30, 2025

Born in: Portland
Resided in: Scarborough

Philip Joseph Doria, 70, of Scarborough, passed away on August 30 at Gosnell Hospice, surrounded by family, following a long illness. He was born to the late Anna and Philip Doria on December 1, 1954 at Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine and spent most of his life living in South Portland.

Phil was the oldest of five siblings, and took this role seriously following the death of his father when he was 17. He attended elementary school in Portland, and was a 1973 graduate of South Portland High School.

While in high school, he was on the football, baseball, and swim teams, and was actively involved in the Boy Scouts. He was a CIT at Camp Hinds in Raymond. Phil especially excelled in swimming, earning the nickname “Fish,” and setting a South Portland High School relay record that held for many years.

As a young adult he remained active in swimming, both as a coach and as a competitor. He swam the Peaks to Portland race on several occasions—once befuddling the medical staff as his body temperature had actually increased following the 2.4 mile ocean swim. (He credited the large meatball sub he consumed as pre-race fuel for this scientific anomaly.) Phil also attained lifeguarding and WSI certifications. Following high school, he attended the University of Southern Maine.

He married his loving wife Andrea on August 22, 1981. The two were longtime residents of South Portland before moving to Scarborough. Phil began his career as a brick mason tender for Cimino Construction, eventually working his way up to construction superintendent. He worked on projects at the Cliff House and several high-rise condominiums in Old Orchard Beach for the first half of his career, and he finished his career with Stroudwater Construction. His final project was the auditorium at Waynflete School, which was built using “green” construction technology.

A devoted father, Phil was heavily involved as a volunteer in the booster organizations for his sons’ football and hockey teams. He coached his sons in hockey, and traveled twice to Sweden with each of their teams.

He loved camping, boating, and, most of all, fishing and spending time with his brothers, sons, and his dog. He was exceptionally proud of his Italian heritage, and was a member of the Italian Heritage Club.

Phil was a kind, caring and dependable person who would drop everything if someone needed him. He always had an ear to listen or a shoulder to lean on, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Phil is survived by his wife of 44 years, Andrea, of Scarborough; his sons, Philip Doria of South Portland and James (Lindsay) Doria of The Forks; brothers Peter (Donna) Doria of Portland and Carlo (Cheryl) Doria of Cape Elizabeth; a sister, Ann Marie Rousselle, of Scarborough; his beloved dog Jasmin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Anthony Doria.

Visiting Hours celebrating Phil’s life will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Monday, September 8th at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland, 1024 Broadway. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Tuesday, September 9th at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. We are so sorry to hear of Phil’s passing. We spent many hours with Phil at Ice Arenas, Lacrosse Fields and booster meetings. He was a good man who would do anything to help someone. We’ll never forget the trip to Sweden for the SPHS hockey team. We miss seeing him the last few years on our Highland Avenue drives and giving our friendly beep. Our thoughts are with Andrea, Phil, Jimmy and the entire Doria family during this very sad time.

  2. Phil was always a great guy to be around and I will always remember his genuine smile. My deepest condolences to the entire Doria Family.

  3. Phil Doria: great friend, dad to his sons, older brother to his brothers and sister and wonderful husband to my cousin Andrea Rice Doria. Phil will be missed by everyone who knew him. Rest in peace my friend!
