South Portland- Peter L. Woodman Sr., 77, of Cole Street, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, following a long illness, his loving family was by his side.
Peter was born in Portland, Maine on February 5, 1941, the son of the late Richard V. and Jane G. (Quinn) Woodman.
Peter had a long career working as a correctional officer at the Maine Youth Center in South Portland, where he touched the lives of many young people struggling to make the right decisions early on in life. The family commented that many of the youth which Peter oversaw would thank him later in life, for getting them on the right path and helping them to make a success of themselves.
Peter was a lifelong resident of Portland. He enjoyed the simple things in life like feeding birds, walking along the Eastern Promenade, and talking on the phone with his numerous friends. He touched the lives of many people, was a friend to all and died as he lived, with a big heart.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Southern Maine for the loving care given to Peter and the family, and a special thank you to Peter's friend Dr. John O'Meara.
Peter was predeceased by a brother, Stephen Woodman. He is survived by his wife Rita (Hastings) Woodman of South Portland; two sons, Eric Woodman of Portland, and Peter L. Jr. and his wife Mary Beth Woodman of Portland; three daughters, Kristina and her husband James Hodgdon of FL, Kecia and her husband William Cookson of FL, and Jennifer Woodman Raber and her husband Michael Raber of FL; a sister, Susan Kimball of Portland; seven grandchildren; several great grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
At Peter's request, a celebration of his life will be held for family and friends at a later date.
