PORTLAND--Daniel Joseph Marshall, 67, died peacefully on October 7th, following a long period of declining health.
The youngest of three children, Danny was born on March 19, 1955 to Margaret Honan Marshall and John Gregory Marshall. Danny’s youth was shaped by summers at Higgins Beach and playing sports with neighborhood friends. He grew up in Portland, attended local schools, and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1973 where he played football and basketball. Following a year at Worcester Academy, Danny enrolled at Fairfield University, graduating in 1978. In February of 1983 Danny married Lucy deGolian, of Atlanta, Georgia. The couple settled in Portland and raised four children. Their house was filled with laughter and colorful stories with characters often invented by Daniel to make his children smile.
Danny began his professional life at Sebago, Inc. as a leather buyer for that shoe manufacturing company. He was liked and respected by the people with whom he worked. Subsequently, he worked as a consultant for Salz, Inc. of California. He was a member of the Portland Country Club and the Cumberland Club for many years.
He was an avid skier and golfer, enjoying the slopes in Jackson, New Hampshire and playing golf at the Portland Country Club with his sons, his brother John, and many close friends. He was an incredibly loyal friend and family member and enjoyed nothing more than gathering both at his homes in Jackson, New Hampshire and Portland. His wit, warmth, and uncommonly gentle spirit will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his friends and family.
He is survived by his former wife, Lucy of Atlanta, Georgia; two daughters, Ann Concannon and her husband John of Portland, and Lucy Dobratz and her husband Ryan of Austin, Texas; and two sons, John and his wife Diana of Chicago, and George and his wife Laura of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by three grandsons, Mack Concannon, Henry Marshall and George Marshall, Jr.; as well as many nieces and nephews; a brother, John G. Marshall, Jr. and his wife Susie of Cumberland Foreside; and a sister, Mary Marshall Piper and her husband Jon of Falmouth.
The family would like to thank Regina Morgan, his longtime caregiver, and the staff at Falmouth by the Sea for their kind and compassionate care.
Services will be private at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. To view Danny’s memorial page or share an online condolence, please visit www.ConroyTullyWalker.com
I am so shocked and saddened by this news. I have so many fond memories of skiing at Pleasant Mountain (called at the time) with our families. Danny and I were the same age and my brother is John’s age so it was great. I remember Danny teaching us “cool” songs on the rides home from the mountain! I have to admit I was a little smitten with him back then! Who wouldn’t be!! My heart goes out to his wife, children, siblings and families. I am so sorry to hear of this and please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers!
Childhood best friend.
Danny was my first best friend . We were born 2 days apart and lived across the street from one another
