Peter H. Joy

Peter H. Joy USN RET CPO, 69, of Springvale, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford, surrounded by those dearest to his heart. Peter was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 1, 1944 to Roland and Mary (Bohon) Joy. He grew up in Cambridge where he attended local schools until his family relocated to Wells when Peter was in high school. He was a 1962 Well High School graduate. During his high school career, he was an active Eagle Scout, competed in cross-country track, and was employed at Howe's Flooring in Wells. Shortly after graduation, Peter enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for 23 years until retiring in 1985. While in the navy he served on several submarines including the USS Odax (SS-484) and the USS James K. Polk (SSBN-645), as well as the USS Peterson (DD-969). He also was a plankowner on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). After retiring from the military, Peter was employed at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, where he worked for approximately five years. In 1992, he relocated to Maine where he worked at Dux Computer Works, met and later married Pauline (Maynard) Traves. Peter was very active in supporting the local veteran community and spent many hours volunteering to help veterans and their families. He was a member of the AMVETS in Sanford, the VFW in Sanford, the American Legion in Rochester, NH, and he served as chaplain for the SUBVETS, Thresher Base, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Peter was an outgoing and funny man with many friends and will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed. Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Pauline Joy of Springvale, ME; two daughters, Christine B. Joy of Pittsburgh, PA and Caroline N. (Joy) Scott and her husband Eric of Pittsburgh, PA; two step-children, Richard P. Traves and his wife Laurie of Spring Hill, FL and Steven C. Traves of Springvale, ME; two granddaughters, Emily Scott and Megan Scott, both of Pittsburgh, PA; five step-grandsons, Richard C. Traves and his wife Renae of Searsport, ME, Norman Traves and his wife Jenn of Spring Hill, FL, Tyler Traves and his wife Kerri-Lyn of Sanford, ME, Cody Traves of Sanford, ME and Alex Traves of Sanford, ME and four step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Alan C. Joy of Lyman, ME, his sister Mary Annah Joy of North Berwick, ME, his sister Elizabeth E. (Joy) Eckhart of Portsmouth, NH, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 27, 2013 at St. George's Episcopal Church located on Emerson Street in Sanford. Interment will follow at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery located on Stanley Road in Springvale.
