Pauline Butler
Pauline E. "Polly" Butler, 82, of Sanford, died on October 15, 2016 after suffering a stroke. She was compassionately cared for by the staff of the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born on May 28, 1934, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Edward L. and Evelyn M. (Money) Spaulding, and loved telling everyone that she was born on the same day as the Dionne quintuplets, and weighed more than all five.Polly worked a variety of jobs in her life, but her most loved "job" was being a homemaker and mother to her children, and "Mimi" and "Nana" to her grandchildren. She was very active, teaching exercise and swimming lessons to area children. Later in life, she took up golf, and fell in love with the sport. Polly was the female club champion at Sanford Country Club for several years. She organized tournaments to benefit the Maine Children's Cancer Program, and enlisted the help of anyone willing to get up early to set up. Always in for a good time, she could put a smile on the face of everyone she met. Decorating for the holidays was a special time for her, as a way to spread her joy to others. When the Red Hat Society became popular, "Queen Mom Polly" started a local chapter, "The Classy Sassy Lassies," and what fun all had!Polly was a spiritual person who believed that everything happened for a reason and accepted all challenges given her.Polly was predeceased by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her children, Deborah Butler (of Sanford), Steven Butler and his wife Sandy (of Sanford), and Christine Barnes (of Pennsylvania), and granddaughters, Tiffany Barnes and her partner Felicia Boushell, Nikki and Michael Costante (of Pennsylvania), and Erika and Nick Castellina (of Massachusetts), and several nieces and nephews.A small memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 1:00-3:00 at the Trafton Senior Center on Elm Street in Sanford, to say good-byes and remember her.A "Celebration of Life" is being planned for May 28, 2017, her birthday, a time when nature is being re-born.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.Condolences may be expressed at www.blackfuneralhomes.com
