South Portland – Pauline A. Marcucci, 88, passed away on October 22, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Portland. Pauline was born on June 30, 1937, in her grandparent’s home in China, ME; the daughter of the late Robert and Alice (Starkey) Maltais.
Pauline grew up in Waterville and attended local schools, graduating from Waterville High School in 1955. She went on to earn her degree in education from Gorham State Teachers College (now known as USM) in 1959.
Pauline began her teaching career at North School and Cummings School in Portland, before finding her career at Holy Cross School, where she taught kindergarten and first grade for 31 years. She took great pride in knowing she had taught hundreds of children to read.
While in college, Pauline met Louis Marcucci, with whom she wanted to share her life. They married shortly after graduation in 1960 and built a life together in South Portland, where they raised their four daughters. As a mother, Pauline was patient, kind, and endlessly devoted—always putting her children and others before herself.
A woman of faith, Pauline was a devoted member of Holy Cross Church. She enjoyed reading, gardening, walking, knitting, and sewing. Family was at the center of her life—she loved hosting gatherings for birthdays and holidays, reading to her grandchildren, and celebrating their accomplishments. Her home was the heart of the family, a place filled with love, laughter, and warmth.
Pauline was a quiet, gentle, and family-oriented woman whose kindness will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
Pauline was predeceased by her brother, Robert Maltais Jr. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Louis Marcucci; daughters, Michele and her husband Gilles Letourneau, Annemarie and her husband Michael Silvius, Victoria and her husband John Volent, and Laurie and her husband Scott Shepard; grandchildren, Maria and Abby Letourneau, Andrew and Erin Volent, Kaley Muniz, Christian and Cameron Shepard; nephew, Robert III; nieces, Natalie and Donna; and friends, Jan, Jeanne, and Margaret.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Nackos and her team at New England Cancer Specialists, as well as the compassionate staff on the fourth floor of Mercy Hospital, for their excellent care of Pauline.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Rd. South Portland, inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland.

Pauline was such a gracious lady. Having taught first grade myself, I was always interested in comparing notes with her.
My prayers and sympathy are with you as you grieve.
team up to Gorham to watch the college team play a game. It was during this trip that I met Pauline, who would eventually marry the coach. May she now rest in eternal peace.
“Mrs Marcucci” taught me more as a parent than she taught my 3 children (who all had her and loved her) which says a lot! She was just wonderful; calm, kind, very wise, and she understood children, all children. She had a big impact on our family and I’m sure many more over her many years of teaching. I’m sorry now that I never followed up in later years to tell her that. May she rest in peace!
