February 13, 1941 ~ December 15, 2018

Penfield, New York - Paula A. Maywalt, 77, of New Wickham Drive, died peacefully on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her loving daughter and granddaughter were by her side. Paula was born in Auburn, New York the daughter of the late Paul J. Maywalt and Ruth L. (Cronk) Foster. She graduated from Oswego Catholic High School in 1959, then entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Convent and continued her studies, earning her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the College of St. Rose in 1965. After leaving the convent in 1968, Paula began a more than 30 year teaching career in the Rochester, NY City School District; she was a beloved Spanish teacher at Franklin High School and Edison Technical & Vocational Center. Officially retiring in 1996, she continued to teach at the Young Mothers Program, whose mission is to support pregnant and parenting students through high school and encourage post-secondary education, until 2003. In her spare time, Paula enjoyed walking, gardening, reading (mystery novels, especially those set in convents, monasteries, or cathedrals), shopping, and caring for others. Her greatest love was the time she spent with her friends and family; if she had a soundtrack, it would be the laughter of her grandchildren and her wind chimes. Paula will be remembered as a strong and kind woman -- her indomitable spirit characterized by fierce love and tireless generosity. Paula is survived by her daughter, Krista and her husband David Aronson of Falmouth, ME; two granddaughters, Sophia and Hope Aronson of Falmouth, ME; two sisters, Catherine and her husband Howard Earhart of CA., and Lynda White of VA; two brothers, Paul and his wife Joan Maywalt of NY, and James and his wife Anne Foster of NY, as well as several nieces and nephews. Services will be held in Rochester, New York in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of Portland. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I met Paula through her sister Cathy in the 1970’s. I will always remember the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners we shared. My children Russ and Laurie adored Krista. When I retired in 1997, Paula reached out to me and shared pictures of her family. I lost touch with Paula after that but I have fond memories of the times we shared.

  2. (Posted for Anna Rodriguez at her request by Krista Aronson). Paula was a bold, courageous and dedicated educator — a professional who readily shared her craft with youngsters. Most of all, Paula was my friend.

    – Krista Aronson

  3. Thank you for this remembrance, Cathy. I truly enjoyed reading your tribute. Indeed, she will be missed. — Krista Aronson (Paula’s daughter).

  4. Thank you for your tribute and your condolences, Mr. D’Angelo. I remember my mom bringing me to Franklin as a child. Perhaps we met once when I was small. All the best. — Krista Aronson (Paula’s daughter)

  5. Paula was a dear friend for many years while we were young and full of grace. We got in touch again about ten years or so ago, after we were both out of the convent and then drifted away again. Life does this. Paula wore a religious medal that said “Come Holy Spirit”. In 1959 when I was a novice in Rochester, my mother bought me the same medal and I have never taken it off. The world will miss Paula. She was the light of kindness. Cathy O’Neil

  6. I just read the obit in the local paper this morning. (D and C Jan 6,2019) I started teaching in 1975 and worked at Franklin high school with Paula. I haven’t seen her in maybe almost 40 years because i went to a different school and am now retired from also teaching foreign languages. Paula was always so friendly and welcoming to me when i was a young guy right out of college. I want to thank her and wish to give me condolences to the family. Sebastian D’Angelo, Greece ny
