Paul was very proud to be a Grandad, and adored his Grandchildren.Paul graduated from Dover High School in New Hampshire in 1964.Paul joined the Army in June of 1965 where he served in Vietnam during the war in the Engineering Battalion, as a Construction Machine Operator. While in the Army he earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and Expert Rifle and Sharpshooter awards.Paul was very proud to be an Army Veteran. He was honorably discharged in June of 1971. He was later honored to receive a Quilt of Valor with his family and friends by his side. After his service to his country, Paul worked as a mechanic for W.D. Matthews, a forklift company, for 35+ years before retiring. He was able to fix most anything and create new electrical contraptions to help run his garden or save worn out appliances.Paul has been a Member of the Lebanon American Legion Post 214 for 10+ years. He often helped out at the spaghetti suppers they held in the past and enjoyed reminiscing about service time with his fellow veterans. He proudly marched with his American Legion Veterans for many years in Lebanon's Memorial Day celebration. His dearest friends are his fellow Veterans, especially Jim Moyer of Wells. Paul dearly loved his family and friends. He never met a stranger, and could make friends with anyone, and always find something in common to discuss. He especially liked discussing current events. He had a very unique sense of humor that people will remember fondly. He liked to make up silly songs and names for his grandkids, such as "Smudge" and "Goobertron". His neighbor, Zack has been lovingly named "Clyde" for as long as he can remember. He often was on the phone calling people just to check on them and make them laugh, especially as of late. He was always willing to help anyone in need, and significantly contributed to many charitable organizations over his lifetime. Paul especially loved growing plants from seed, and planting and maintaining a very large vegetable garden each year. It pleased him to grow enough produce to share with his friends, family and strangers. You name it, he grew it! He was always excited to get new seeds to try. He also found pleasure in growing Gladiolas. He gave many away to friends, and some folks would come to his house to purchase them during the Summer. He would enter his Gladiolas in the Acton Maine Fair each year, and most always won blue ribbons for their size and beauty. This year, his seedlings will be transplanted into his garden when the time is right and maintained in his honor by his children and grandchildren. His loved ones will enjoy the produce he started and extra will be donated to the Lebanon American Legion. Paul was a dog lover and adopted quite a few dogs in his lifetime, loving and caring for each of them. He once bravely rescued one of his dogs from under the frozen river on his property.Paul was a great man, he sacrificed and provided for his country and loved ones his entire life. He was a proud American and Veteran, and will be missed by many. If he were here, you'd hear him saying "Hello to you!" and "Cheerio and Pip-Pip!" A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 12th at the Southern Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery at 83 Stanley Rd, Springvale, Maine.
