Patrick W. Hickey
Patrick W. Hickey lost his brave and courageous four-month battle with lung cancer on Saturday, December 23, 2006, one day after his 87th birthday. Over the past four months his wife Gloria M. Hickey was at his side as his caregiver, and remained with him over the past three days at H.D. Goodall Hospital.Patrick was born in Sanford, ME on December 22, 1919. He was the son of Maurice and Ora Boothby Hickey, and was educated in Sanford schools, graduating from Sanford High School with the class of 1939.Patrick proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands with a Marine Battalion Repair Unit for three years.He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1980, and in his retirement enjoyed traveling, both in this country and abroad. He also enjoyed gardening, but was most happy when he was off in his red truck for a day of golf at the Sanford Country Club with his good friends Sherm Higgins and Christo Stratos where he was a long time member. He was thrilled to have made a hole in one at the age of 78, and always humbly said it was just a matter of luck, not skill.Patrick was a long time member of the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport, where he was very active for many years, he served on it's Outreach and Stewardship committees, was involved with Caring Unlimited, and the Church Care Corp. He was also a current member of the North Parish Congregational Church of Sanford.Predeceasing him are his twin sons, Patrick, and Michael, his parents, a sister Irene McHugh, and two brothers, Maurice and Robert.He is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years Gloria Millman Hickey of Sanford, a brother John of DeLand, FL, a niece Patricia McHugh Foster of Falmouth, and three nephews, Richard McHugh of Rochester, NH, Winston McHugh and Ronald McHugh both of Dover, NH. Also surviving is a very special Irish cousin, Kathleen Morgan Eaton and her husband David of Vienna, VA.A 1:30 PM Memorial service for Patrick will be held on Friday, January 5, 2007 at the North Parish Congregational Church in Sanford, ME.In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Women's Fellowship of North Parish Congregational Church, 893 main St. Sanford, ME 04073.
