Omer L. Dumont, 89, of Sanford, died December 28 at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford after a lengthy illness.He was born in Trois Pistoles, Quebec, Canada, one of 17 children born to Joseph and Appoline (Parent) Dumont. He came to Sanford as a young child and attended Sanford schools.He was working in local mills when World War II broke out, during which he served in the US Army in the European Theater.After the war, he returned to Sanford and was employed as a supervisor with the Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills, then as a cabinet maker with Gendron Lumber. From 1957 to 1964 he owned and operated Dumont's Cozy Corner at the intersection of High Street and Route 4 in Sanford. He then went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he was employed for 20 years, retiring in 1982. In his retirement he worked part time painting and in his son's construction business. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking.Mr. Dumont was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church of the St. Therse of Lisieux Parish in Sanford. He was a member of the VFW in Sanford.His family members recalled that he was unique and extraordinary in his work ethic and in his generosity to others.Mr. Dumont was predeceased by a son James O. Dumont in 1986.Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Jeannette (Huard) Dumont of Sanford, a daughter Christine Huppe and her husband Roger of Alfred, a son Thomas P. Dumont and his wife Janet of Sanford, 3 sisters, Jeannette Girard of Springvale, Simone Fortier of Concord, NH, Lillian Couture of Sanford, 3 brothers, Andre Dumont of Shapleigh, Joseph Dumont of Brunswick, Conrad Dumont of Sidney, 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 9 to 10:45 AM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Holy Family Church of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish in Sanford. Burial will be in the spring in St. Ignatius Cemetery.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the St. Thomas School Scholarship Fund, 69 North Avenue, Sanford, ME 04073.
