Normand Wilfred L'Heureux, 90 passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on May 11, 2019 at St Andre's Home in Biddeford. He was born in Sanford, Maine on February 26, 1929 to Albert and Blanche (Fontaine) L'Heureux. He was predeceased by both of his parents, his brothers Leo, Henry, Robert, Walter, Arthur and his sisters Lillian and Annette. On September 11, 1954 , Normand married Lorraine "Shirley" Durant. Together they loved to dance. They could often be seen doing the Jitterbug to "In The Mood" by Glenn Miller as this was one of their favorites. They loved to camp when their children were young and always enjoyed being with their friends. In their later years, they enjoyed traveling south for the Winter months. Normand loved spending time with his family and was grateful for Shirley and for the life that they shared together. Normand was a very proud man. He was very proud of each and every one of his children and grandchildren. He recently told one of his nurses that his family is his world and life. He was also proud of his hometown of Sanford. Often when he traveled, he would wear a Sanford or Maine shirt in hopes it would strike up a conversation. He loved to talk with people and anyone who knew him would remember his giggle after everything he said. The translation of L'Heureux in English is "the happy one". Normand exemplified this in its truest form. He was always happy. He had an unknown talent of being able to pick up almost any instrument and play by sound. He also enjoyed drawing, painting, and woodworking. He was a true craftsman. He was very passionate about music and art. Normand was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean War. Upon return he worked Pratt and Whitney in the East Hartford, CT plant. After their first child was born, he and Shirley relocated back to their hometown of Sanford where Normand began working at Aerofab, building planes. He then went on to work at Wasco and Architectural Skylight, where he assembled and installed skylights. While working at Architectural Skylight, he assembled a large skylight that can still be seen today at the welcome center at Arlington National Cemetery. He was very proud of this accomplishment. He is survived by his loving wife Lorraine "Shirley" Durant L'Heureux, his daughter Deborah Hopkins and her husband Kenny, his son Kevin L'Heureux and his wife Lorina, his daughter Gina Sawtelle and her husband Chet, his grandchildren Josh L'Heureux and his wife Colleen, Chelsy L'Heureux Waterman and her husband Derek, Noah Sawtelle and Sydney Sawtelle, and his great-grandchildren Levi L'Heureux, Cole Waterman and two great grandchildren expected in the fall. Normand was a well admired man and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and all that knew him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 23rd at 10AM at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church in Springvale. Burial with military honors will follow at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Normand's name to the Senior Trafton Center in Sanford, Maine.
