Norma Mae Bridges
September 19, 1963 ~ August 28, 2017
Westbrook- Norma Mae Bridges, 53, of Falmouth Street, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 28, 2017.
Norma was born in Portland, Maine on September 19, 1963, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Witham) Murphy. She attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School.
Norma worked as a CNA at the Jewish Home (the Cedars) for more than twenty years before going to work at the South Portland Nursing Home. After several years in South Portland, Norma decided to venture out on her own, starting her own business, the Westbrook Taxi, which she ran for more than seven years providing a much needed service to the community of Westbrook.
In her spare time, Norma loved to go fishing in the river, downhill skiing and roller blading, she loved to go to yard sales, spending time at the pool and dancing. Her greatest love, however, was the time she spent surrounded by her family, especially her children and grandchildren who were her everything. Norma had a big heart and was happiest when she was helping others. Norma will long be remembered as a very outgoing woman with a strong will who didn't hold back anything. Her son commented "she had a big presence for such a small package."
Norma was predeceased by a brother Jerry Murphy. She is survived by her longtime companion, Thomas McDonough of Portland; a daughter, Alicia and her husband Paul Woodcock of Vermont; a son, Ryan Kelley of Windham; a sister, Nina Murphy of Mississippi; a brother, Joseph Murphy of Westbrook; five grandchildren, Riley Kelley, Piper Kelley, Lillyan Woodcock, Robbie Woodcock, and Taylor McDonough; several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours celebrating Norma's life will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017, from 12:00 to 2:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. A service will follow at the funeral home at 2:00pm with the Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Burial will be private in Calvary Cemetery.

Norma was one of those rare folks who not only was an excellent CNA but also was the most kind-hearted lady who, as her obituary alluded to, wasn’t afraid of sharing her opinions! I was privileged to work w/her @ Cedars and So. Portland Nursing Home in my role as a Nurse Practitioner and could always rely on Norma’s astute observations. She was one of kind who certainly made her mark in this community.

A tough cookie. Thats what I thought when I first met Norma. She said what she thought was right and I liked that. We became instant friends, especially when we figured out that our birthdays were just a few days from each other. We had a lot of fun together back in the 80’s. I was there for her first wedding and first child, Ryan. We dressed up for Halloween one year at work, She was Cyndi Lauper. She was a lovely person. I am so sorry to all of her family.
