Rev. Nelson R. Elliott, 83, of Scarborough and Sanford, Maine, passed away on Friday February 16, 2007 at the Piper Shores in Scarborough. He was born in East Boston, MA, on August 25, 1923, a son of Robert A. and Jennie E. (Nelson) Elliott. He was proud of the fact that he was the youngest Eagle Scout of Troop 1 in East Boston.He graduated from East Boston High School and Gordon College of Theology. He pursued his Theological studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he received his Theological and Masters of Divinity Degrees. On August 26, 1944 he married the former Priscilla Whittemore in Massachusetts. In 1950 he entered the United States Army completing The Chaplain Officers School and serving as Chaplain until his discharge in 1955His life was dedicated to the ministry serving the following churches in Massachusetts, The First Baptist Church in Newburyport, Stoughton Street Baptist Church in Dorchester, Community Church of East Gloucester, in New York at the First Baptist Church in Ballston Spa. In Maine he served at the Pleasant Street Baptist Church in Mechanic Falls and The First Baptist Church in Shapleigh. Again he served in various capacities on Boards and Committees of the American Baptist Church in Maine, Massachusetts and New York. During these years he became involved and dedicated with the local fire departments serving as a call firefighter as well as chaplain with the Mechanic Falls Fire Dept., Newburyport Fire Dept., Gloucester Fire Dept., Ballston Spa Fire Dept., Union Fire Co. #2 in N.Y., and the Sanford Fire Department. He served as Chief Fire Chaplain for the states of Maine and New York. He was also an avid collector of Fire Department memorabilia. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Priscilla Elliott, his son, Robert W. Elliott and his wife, Wendy of Newfield, granddaughter, Jennifer, grandson, Robert R. Elliott, step grandchildren, Nikkol and David Atwell.Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, February 20 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale, Maine, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11am.
