ACTON—Nancy E. Whitman, 70, of Acton, died Saturday September 9, 2023 in Biddeford.
She was born in Sanford November 22, 1952 the daughter of Victor and Bessie (Goodwin) Horn. She grew up in Acton and attended Acton Elementary School. She graduated from Sanford High School and later the CO-OP program at WABAN emphasizing special education. She became a Teacher’s Aid at WABAN and later an Education Technician in Wells, where she remained for many years.
Nancy lived in Sanford, Springvale and Wells before settling down at the family homestead in Acton. When she was younger, Nancy enjoyed camping, bowling and game night with family. She had strong religious beliefs and, before COVID, regularly attended church at Nute Ridge Bible Chapel. Most recently, she enjoyed listening to services on her phone.
Nancy was always helpful to friends in need. She often took people to appointments and had a beautiful smile and a great laugh. Nancy was happiest when she was at home with family and friends.
Nancy is survived by her son, Shane Whitman and his wife Billy Jo and their children, Brayden Hafford, Paisleigh and Aliyah Whitman of Ossipee, NH; her sister, Barbara Horn of Acton and her former husband, Ralph Whitman and his wife Frances.
A graveside service will be held at the Milton Mills Cemetery on Tuesday September 19 at 11:00 am
I have so many memories of Aunt Nancy and I will miss her so much. My thoughts are with you all
Much love Beth
Nancy was my sister-in-law and a great Aunt to my children. She had a wonderful laugh and fabulous attitude. Thank you Nancy for being part of my life…may you RIP as you enter your heavenly home.

My memories of Nancy begin when I was very young and my grandparents would bring me with them to game nights, suppers, and parties at the Horn homestead. She was so nice, cheerful, funny, and caring. As I grew up I saw Nancy less, but when we did, we talked, laughed, and caught up, and it was never a short visit. Then I became her son Shane’s junior high teacher in Acton and we shared hours talking about Shane, teaching, and education in general. And we laughed. Nancy loved to laugh. And she was so proud of Shane. I cherished all my time with Nancy, Shane, Barbie and all the Horn’s. They were such a big part of my life and I’m grateful for those years. I can still see Nancy smiling.
My sympathies to Nancy’s family. She was such an encouraging face with kind words at Nute when we were there. May she rest in peace with her Lord❤️
Our sympathies to Nancy’s family. She always had a smile for me when we were at Nute. She encouraged many! She will be missed,❤️

Nancy was a person who made the world a better place just by being in it.
Love
Compassion
Kindness
Faithfulness
Nancy was there since the beginning: she attended the towns surprise adoption party they threw back in 92 when my parents adopted my sister and I. I became very good friends with Shane over the years and she was always there. I could always tell how much she loved her son and everyone else too.
Best wishes to the whole family and most sincere condolences. Nancy was a treasure of a human being. I loved my time with her and the rest of the family.
Nancy was like another mom to me. Whenever I was over to see Shane she was warm and welcoming and loving. Whenever my troublesome ways caused me to need a place to crash and a listening ear, she provided it with no second thoughts. She even drove me to and from work everyday when I stayed in her house. She was just as caring with all the other kids who frequented her house, and people in general. She was defined by selflessness and love.
Nancy was the most loving, caring, friendly, hospitable, easy going, and down right humorous woman I will ever know. She treasured Shane and adored her grandchildren.
Nancy was my first friend when we started school in 1959. We shared secrets and spent every weekend we could together up to and through high school. Nancy taught me how to ride a bike. Nancy went to prom with my brother so that I could go to prom with my boyfriend. I went on my first blind date with Nancy and her boyfriend and a friend of his. Nancy gave me my life’s beginning , she got me into Co-op with her in high school working for Sanford School Department with special needs, after graduation Sanford hired me and my career began. She was always looking after me ❤️
The grieving process takes time. Allow yourself to take as long as it takes. When you lose a love like Nancy, we can start the qheal by appreciating everything she graced our lives with ❤️
Rest in Heavenly Peace my BFF
I’ve known Nancy since she was a little girl and watched her grow into a beautiful, loving, caring woman with a strong faith in God. Her positivity was contagious, and keeping in touch with and reaching out to others was a big part of her daily life. Her greatest joy was sharing pics and posts about her family, including her little dog. Nancy will be remembered as a beautiful person who loved much, gave of herself in any way that she could, and shared her faith with others. My prayer is that God will wrap Barbie, Shane, and all of her familyher family in His loving arms of comfort

Mike and My condolences to Barbie, Shane and to his family, and to Bella rose
I had so many fond memories of Aunt Nancy. I will miss her.
Sending all my love and healing thoughts💜
She glowed from within and made her love known and she didn’t have to preach about her love for the Lord it radiated from her.
She was a true friend. She cared more about others than herself. She always sent cards to friends and family to show her love. A social butterfly as well.
Very caring, loved to laugh and had a true commitment to her faith in God.
Longtime friend, church and school sine 1962
Nancy was such a great friend. She and I and another friend went to school together since 4th grade in 1962. I remember her being a quiet, nice girl. I suppose I would be too if my father was the bus driver and custodian at my school! I remember her saying how she didn’t like when she would dispose of something she didn’t like on the school lunch tray because her dad was there to witness it and it was discussed that night at home. We remained friends up to the day she passed and we texted each other almost every night to catch up with the things going on in our lives and to make breakfast or lunch dates with our friend Doris. I miss you Nancy and have reread our recent texts. I will miss you sending pictures of your grandchildren and our conversations. My heart goes out to Shane and his family and to Barb. Nancy was the best one could ever ask for. RIP Nancy and our once a month gathering will surely be missed and so will our almost daily texting.
She loved to sing and was a talented Bible teacher
Nancy was a wonderful friend to me and to many others as well. I have lots of fun memories of spending time with her singing in the church choir, teaching Sunday school and vacation Bible school as well as so much time just sitting and talking. Nancy put others above herself and her biggest joys were her son Shane and his family and of course her sister Barbie. I will always remember her great smile and infectious laugh. Shane, Barbie amd family made her very proud. Keep her memories in your mind and hearts
Deepest sympathy to Nancy family as they say goodbye to a beautiful, kind, caring lady. I will miss our “text chats “ which I always looked forward to. She now has become an Angel in Heaven.❤️
So sorry for Shane, Barbie, and all. Nancy was a special friend who I met when we worked for years at Wells Elementary School.
Wishing you peace, comfort, courage, and lots of love at this time of sorrow.
Her favorite place I would say is Wells beach. She liked to go there to just enjoy the view and the fresh air. Her favorite holiday was definitely Christmas!
I’ll always remember how she bought everything in pairs. She would laugh when I would ask her why and said she buys everything in twos 🙂
She valued her son more than anything on this earth. She also valued her relationship with God and was a devoted Christian.
Rest in peace, Nancy. Thank you for showing me all your love for the past 16 years. I’ll forever miss you more than you could have ever known.
I’m so sorry to everyone your loss. My heart is broken to know that she’s no longer here with us but I know she’s up in heaven smiling down on all of us. Sending prayers for healing to everyone.
