Nancy B. Hobbs, 76, a lifelong resident of Alfred, died on Friday, May 27, 2011 at Newton Center in Sanford.Nancy was born in Alfred on January 8, 1935 to John and Ida (Lockwood) Johnstone, where she grew up and attended local schools. In 1956 she married Herbert Hobbs and they would raise five children and spend the next 40 years together until his death in 1996. During her working life Nancy was employed in local shoe shops and as a cleaner in the Alfred Post Office. She enjoyed walking, reading, shopping, cooking and watching the cooking channel. She also particularly enjoyed feeding and watching the birds. Nancy was an outgoing person with many friends. She was proud of the fact that she was born on the same day as Elvis Presley, whom she considered to be her twin. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and friend and will be dearly missed.Surviving are five children, Kevin Hobbs and his wife Patty of Sanford, Brenda Holland and her husband Tom of Alfred, James Hobbs and his companion Tracy of Alfred, Barbara Hobbs and her companion Danny of Alfred and Herbert Hobbs and his wife Linda of Alfred; five siblings, Bertha Garland of Hollis, Shirley Letourneau of Sanford, Ruby Johnstone of Sanford, Earl Johnstone of Springvale and Lucien Johnstone of Alfred; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Newton Center for the care and compassion shown to Nancy and her family during her illness.At Nancy's request there will be no services.
