Nancy J. Hatfield

nancy hatfield
Nancy Hatfield died November 29, 2015 at the South Portland Nursing Home. Born on August 1, 1955 in Houlton, Maine, Nancy was the third child of Elvin and Edwena Hatfield. The love showered on her by her parents formed her gregarious nature and indomitable spirit. She became the joyous heart of a large extended family. Leaving Houlton in late adolescence, Nancy became a resident at Pineland Center. Though included as a member of the Pineland Consent Decree, by all accounts she was well cared for. With the closing of Pineland, residents with Down Syndrome were among the first integrated into the wider community. Nancy joined her parents on McKinley Street in South Portland. For many years thereafter, she lived at the Violet Group Home and at Stroudwater Place Condominiums in Westbrook through Residential Resources. Nancys gift was her adorable nature, loving spirit and magical smile. Always a favorite among peers and caregivers, her smile, extended hand, hug or a kiss brought joy to strangers and friends alike. Family includes her brother, Tim and his family of Solon, ME; Peter and his family of Seville, Ohio; and sister and guardian Susan Shapiro and her husband Aaron of Portland. Susan and Aaron wish to express profound gratitude to Nancys many friends, neighbors, and caregivers over the decades with special mention to Donald Medd, MD, and the staff at the Violet Group Home, Residential Resources and Community Partners. The South Portland Nursing Home provided exceptional care worthy of yet further distinction. We can never thank you enough. At the families request all services will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, ME.
