Miriam Diggery Trafton, 94, a longtime resident of Sanford, died March 9 at the Sealrock Health Care Facility in Saco after a lengthy illness.She was born on June 2, 1913 in Portland, the third of four girls born to Charles and Gertrude (Groves) Diggery. The family soon moved to Sanford where her father opened Thayer-Diggery Clothing Store. She graduated from Sanford High School and like her two older sisters, she went on to Bates College from where she graduated in 1935. In 1939, she married Harold Trafton of Mapleton and they settled in Sanford, where they were to live all of their working lives, she as the bookkeeper in her father's store and Harold as a traveling salesman. In 1998 Harold and Miriam moved to Huntington Common in Kennebunk, where she lived until her final illness. Miriam was a member of the Sanford First Baptist Church, the Gleaners and the Tri-U Class. She was a member of the Searchlight Club, the Sanford Golf Club and the Bauneg Beg Ski Club.An artist in her spare time, she enjoyed painting in oil and watercolors, drawing with pastels and crafting.She is predeceased by her parents and her three sisters: Dorothy, Gertrude, and Velma. With her passing, the Diggery name dies.She is survived by her husband Harold T. Trafton, to whom she was married for 69 years, a niece and several nephews.Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 5-7 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
