Portland - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Michael J. Furey, Jr.
He was born in Anbally, Tuam, Ireland the son of Michael J. Sr. and Nora Furey in 1929. Micko immigrated to NYC in 1957 where he met and married his wife Sarah. In 1970 he brought his family to Maine to care for his elderly aunt and made Portland their home. He was a well-respected shop owner in the city for the last 40 years.
Micko was a man of dignity, honor and very strong faith. He believed that no one was above any other, and helping the indigent and downtrodden. As a boy, Micko took an oath to be a Pioneer to abstain from alcohol and tobacco, which he and his family were very proud of. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Hibernians, The Irish American Club and a faithful communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He completed his first full marathon at age 75 and went on to complete 7 half-marathons. He also competed in the Beach to Beacon until age 83.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Maureen; brother, Mattie; and daughter, Catherine. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah; daughters, Mary, Theresa and Karen, and grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear brother, Paddy.
Rest in Peace, Pop. We love you.
