SCARBOROUGH—Michael Patrick Collins Jr., 56, of Scarborough, died Sunday July 23rd at his home.
He was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts on January 1, 1967, the son of Michael P. Collins, Sr. and Gail Mueller.
Often known as “Mick,” Michael grew up in Wakefield, Massachusetts and North Parsonsfield, Maine, graduating from Sacopee Valley High School. He was an avid skier in his youth, even working at a ski resort in Vermont, where he would ski every day. But besides the mountains, he loved the ocean, which eventually drew him back to Maine. He lived, worked and played on Peaks and the other islands of Casco Bay, where he dove for sea urchins with his father. Spending that time on the boat with his dad far outweighed the urchins and diving in the frigid murky waters.
A skilled craftsman, Michael worked for Wright-Ryan Construction since 1987, working his way up to Senior Superintendent before retiring in 2023. Michael was well respected in the industry, having previously been recognized with the Golden Hammer award for his outstanding commitment and quality of work. He worked on a variety of major commercial and residential projects in the Greater Portland area, including the renovation of the 80,000 sq ft Press Hotel.
Michael loved the simple things in life and always had a story to tell. He enjoyed hanging out and barbecuing with family and friends, listening to good music, talking sports and cars, as well as history and a good Tom Clancy novel. Blessed with the ‘Luck of the Irish,’ he also somehow knew how to place a winning bet every year on the Kentucky Derby!
With all his interests, the greatest source of Michael’s happiness and pride was found in his 3 children. He loved them fiercely and was beyond proud of their accomplishments and what fantastic young adults each of them has become.
Michael is survived by his children, Cooper Collins of Westbrook, and Graceson Collins and Ruby Collins of Portland; his ex-wife and dear friend, Marsie Collins of Portland; his father, Michael Collins, Sr. of Kezar Falls; his mother, Gail Mueller of Gulfport, Florida; his sister, Erin Clark and her husband Frank of Scarborough; their daughter Allison Clark and Allison’s son Callum; and several special uncles, aunts and cousins.
Visiting hours celebrating Michael’s life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 from 10:00am to 11:00am at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A memorial service will follow in the chapel at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Michael’s name to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, P.O. Box 336, Westbrook, ME 04098.

A very long time ago, in a very small town, a group of kids grew up together. Michael was a member of this special group. He was a lively, lovable, warm hearted goofball . We all loved him dearly. The winds of life blew the friends out of the small town into the world and onto their own paths. I always wondered how Michael was over the years . This news breaks my heart into pieces . I send perpetual condolences to his family and wish them the best .The universe took him too soon. May he fly high and free. The hardest “ good bye” is the one that never gets a chance to be said. I know many of us wish we had the chance to tell him goodbye. I will do it in my dreams and prayers. Rest in peace Mickey. Condolences to all…..Ariel White Rodrigue
Mick and I, in our late teens, had an amazing adventure as we drove from ME to CA. A Navy friend asked us to deliver his baby blue Camaro to Long Beach so of course we jumped on the chance of a lifetime. We loaded the car, mostly with Kinks cassettes, and lived the dream. No hardships could break Mick’s infectious spirit, especially with Ariel at the end of the rainbow. We also loved playing hoop and I feel so fortunate that we were able to reconnect in recent years on Plum Island. Thanks for such fond memories Mick. ~Bob
Have some many memories of us growing up together at your house in Maine, Nana & Grampa’s camp. Never forget the yellow school bus! Such awesome memories with you and Erin. It was always us 5 cousins together!
Will sure miss you…..
Fly high Angel 😇 ❤️
Mick was a true friend, not only to my husband Bobby but to me as well. I had the best times of my life living on the hill above mick and marsie. So young and so happy. Mick was always smiling, and was such a nice person. I’m so thankful for these memories.
So sorry Mikey
You was a great friend you will be missed
