Mavis Wainwright (Estey) Chessie of Shapleigh, left this earthly life for her spiritual journey on Sunday October 5th with her loving family by her side.Mavis was a registered nurse and worked at a hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. She spent many years at Fort Fairfield General Hospital, finishing her career at H. D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Mavis was born on June 11, 1930 in Upper Durham, New Brunswick, Canada a daughter to Ellis and Mildred (Allaby) Estey. She married the love of her live, Gerald J. Chessie on September 8, 1951.Mavis had many interests over her long life. She enjoyed spending many hours knitting, sewing and quilting for her six grandchildren and also for craft fairs. Many hands have been protected by the mittens she has made. She made a quilt for every one of her nieces and nephews that were married as a wedding gift using quilt blocks that she and her sister Eunice made. She enjoyed many years of camping in the wilds of the Renous Highway in New Brunswick, Canada, New England and beyond with her family and friends. She spent her last years seeing all the sights of Scotland, England and cruises to the islands. After losing her husband, she enjoyed many bus trips with her friends Edith, Sherley and Lil to mention a few. The mystery trips were her favorites. Her weekly visits from Julia Smith were the high point of her week. She spent many hours watching classic movies. She cherished her long talks over a pot of coffee with her two oldest grandsons Caleb and Jonathan talking of everything and anything. She enjoyed teaching her oldest granddaughter Sarah, how to quilt, sew and talking about cars and boys. She had many visits with her granddaughter Meredith talking about snowmobiling and 4-wheeling. Meredith tried her hardest to take Lil Nannie for a ride, but she kept putting Meredith off. Mavis also enjoyed her two youngest grandchildren Robert and Caroline racing down the driveway on their bikes to bring in her mail.Mavis is predeceased by her parents, her stepfather Ronald, her sister Eunice, her husband of 50+ years, Gerald and her favorite dog Scarlett. She is survived by her son Christopher G. Chessie, his wife Martha and their children Caleb and Meredith, her son Stephen J. Chessie, his wife Rosanne and their children Robert and Caroline, all of Shapleigh, her daughter Nicola C. Roberts, her husband Douglas and their children Sarah and Jonathan all of Springvale, her stepbrother Donald McAllister, his wife Millicent and their children Todd, Scott and their families, her stepsister Clara Buck and her children Gene, Valerie and their families, several nieces, nephews, cousins and her Aunt Polly Hanscom, of Canada and the U.S. She also leaves behind her beloved kitty Puff.Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 5-8 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church with burial to follow in Notre Dame Cemetery in Springvale. Friends and family are invited to a gathering at The Family Center, 574 Main Street, Springvale following the burial.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Homehealth Visiting Nurses, 15 Industrial Park Road, Saco, ME 04072.
