Dr. Maurice J. Morin, 89, a longtime Sanford resident and optometrist, passed away on April 19th in West Palm Beach, Florida.Dr. Morin was born May 13, 1920, in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Oscar and Eva (Lagare) Morin. After graduating from high school in Wakefield, Ma., he attended St. John's Prep and the University of Notre Dame. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Optometry and enlisted in the US Army for two years. In 1944, he began his practice of optometry in Sanford, where he worked for 38 years until his retirement in 1982. After that time, he split his time between Sanford and West Palm Beach, where he wintered for the last 28 years.Dr. Morin leaves behind his wife of 29 years, M. Yvette Morin, two daughters, Suzanne (Richard) Faulkner of Sanford, and Judith Morin of Yarmouth, son, John (Elaine) of Visalia, California and stepson, Michael (Sandy) Cote of Sanford. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rita Beaudoin Morin, and son, Stephen.Dr. Morin was very civic-minded. He was a past member of the Sanford School Board, the Board of Appeals and the Urban Renewal Board. He was a longtime member of the Board of Directors of the former Sanford Trust Company, Norstar Bank and the Fleet Bank. Dr. Morin was a lifetime member of the American Optometry Association. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.A Memorial Mass to celebrate his 90 years is planned for 11:00 on May 14th at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church located on North Avenue in Sanford. Interment will be at a future date in the Southern Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Parker and the staff of the York County Dialysis Center in Biddeford for their loving, compassionate and competent care over the years.
